Isla vs. Like it vs. Don’t like it

I think the name Isla is pretty, but what is bothering me is the spelling, the silent S. I’m worried people will think it’s weird even though there are other names with silent letters ex. Thomas. What’s your opinion?

I’ve seen the name a few times on this site, and I never knew the "s" was silent until reading your post. So...in my mind, the name was a little odd. Now that I know the "s" is silent, the name is rather cute. You will probably run into people like me through the years, but who cares!! :) Good luck!

I love it! Lot’s of names have silent letters, like my name, Sarah. I think they help make the name look pretty. "Ila" without the ’s’ just doesn’t look right. Also, I don’t many people will mispronounce her name. Isla sort of reminds me of ’island’, which has a silent ’s’, so I would pronounce it like island (minus the ’nd’) even if I didn’t already know how to pronounce it. Isla is pretty, you should use it.

It’s a beautiful traditional name, and don’t change the spelling! A lot of people will mis-pronounce it the first time, but once you have corrected them they will always remember because it does make some sense. It’s also getting to be more common again, so more and more people will be familiar with the correct pronunciation as your girl grows up.

becoming to common. i would go with something different. it will most likely be the next Ava/Olivia

Isla is gorgeous! It’s short,sweet and simple! I would not let people’s ignorance influence your decision. Don’t lower the bar, make people learn it :) Isla Fisher, the actress, is making the name more popular these days.
