Announce vs. Pregnancy vs. to Hubby

I apologize that this is off topic, but I LOVE and frequently vote on this site and was hoping you could help me. What are some fun and creative ideas for announcing a pregnancy to your husband? Last time it just kind of slipped out and he ended up accidently stabbing a pop can with a pocket knife (long story). Although I’m not sure I’m pregnant yet, we have been trying and I have a suspicion. Can you please help me make this second announcement more special? Our daughter is 2, and it would be fun to let her help, but not necessary. Thanks so much!

Go shopping for a ’’ Big Sister’’ T-shirt or make one and have her show him the t-shirt. lol

That is a really cute idea! I wonder if I could make one. I live in a very rural area and there’s not much shopping around, so I am not sure where I could buy one, unless I ordered online. Although, I think I would spill the secret before it could be shipped--I’m terrible with good news secrets! Lol! Thanks for the idea! Keep them coming!

You and your daughter can play a game of hangman him and make the answer "I’m pregnant" or your daughter can draw a picture of you with a belly bump and she can give it to him.
posted by guest :: 12 years ago | report
That is a cute idea too! I can never come up with these kinds of things. I think I could have her do the picture, but we never play hangman, and he knows this is about the time we would know if I were pregnant or not, so I think he would guess before we even started. Very cute idea, though. I might keep that in mind in case we have a third...

Well I got pregnant with my daughter Brooklyn a week before my boyfriend Tyler’s 16th birthday so I did this I went and bought a custome made cake that said happy birthday daddy right now I’m in mommy’s tummy but I will see you in 9 months love your baby. As soon as he saw that he started crying and was over joy
posted by guest :: 12 years ago | report
A cake is a good idea too. His birthday is a several months away, and Father’s Day just passed, but if the timing ends up working out differently, I would probably go with this method! Thanks for sharing!

I did something very similar to the previous poster. I wrote a letter from our baby’s prospective. It read,

"Dear Daddy,
You don’t know me yet, but I’ll be entering the world in about 9 months and can’t wait to meet you!
Love, baby ______ (last name)."

And then I actually mailed it and he got it in the mail. It really surprised him and he was thrilled.

Claire, that is so cute! I love that you actually mailed it! That is a great idea! This is so much fun, folks, keep the stories coming!

I had hired a plane and had them draw the words baby i’m pregnant in the sky

Nothing extra special for us ... we were just checking out of a store and I pointed to a little kid who was having a temper tantrum and asked him if he was ready for that. He gave me a questioning look, I smiled and nodded and then he promptly told the cashier that we were going to have a baby. :)
posted by guest :: 12 years ago | report
Honey, if that’s true, you have way more money than I do! Craetive, though! Lol!
posted by guest :: 12 years ago | report
Creative, I mean.

Well my hubby is a obgyn so me and his coworkers did this we went into the comp data records and wrote an email to him which said dear doctor shaw you have a new person to watch now it’s your wife
posted by Candice :: 12 years ago | report
Love the story about the store! Candice, your story is neat too. Won’t work for me, but still makes me smile!

Well it was my hubby’s bday so I sent a cake to his office saying we are now a family of 3 i’m pregnant
posted by guest :: 12 years ago | report
I left the positive pregnancy test on the bathroom sink so that he’d see it when he went in to wash up for dinner.
posted by guest :: 12 years ago | report
That’s fun about announcing it at the office. Women can bring cakes and stuff to their office all the time saying they’re pregnant, but how does a father announce it at his workplace? That’s neat that you kind of solved that problem for him.

I took my hubby to a picnic and pointed to another pregnant women and her husband kissing and massaging her belly and said isn’t that nice and he just knew
posted by Sammy :: 12 years ago | report
Ah, Sammy, that is sweet. I like the idea of letting my daughter help break the news, but a special date night or picnic or something sounds pretty nice too!
posted by Poll Poster :: 12 years ago | report
It didn’t mean to reveal it this way (was trying to come up with something elaborate), but one Saturday he woke up to the sound of me being very sick in the bathroom. He knew. :( Hopefully, you can find a better situation that that one. :)

I actually "stole" my way of telling him from the 90s show Full House. Made a dinner consisting of baby back ribs, baby carrots, baby etc and asked him if he saw a theme. He did and was estatic!
posted by guest :: 12 years ago | report
I did something very funny I went and bought a book called daddy and baby and jumped in bed with him and started reading it to him half way through he started crying and asked are you pregnant
posted by guest :: 12 years ago | report
Tara, I know what you mean! That is what I am trying to do! The first time around, he asked me. He was headed off to a 20-hr shift after 4 hrs of sleep and a 20-hr shift the day before. He was running late, dead tired, and was having trouble getting his carton of Mt. Dew open so he was working on it with his pocket knife. I told him, yes, I was pregnant, and he stabbed his knife through a pop can and said, "What?" I had been on fertility drugs for a year, so he was used to me telling him no. So he was all worked up for his next 20-hr shift, and I wasn’t even going to see him again until the next day! Very exciting, but not how I imagined it!

Well my boyfriend has a band so I asked his buddies to write a song about babies and sing it to him
posted by guest :: 12 years ago | report
I remember that episode of Full House! Loved it, but I am a TERRIBLE cook! Wouldn’t know how to make baby back ribs if my life depended on it! Lol! The book idea is very cute too! I love all of these stories! Very sweet!
posted by Poll Poster :: 12 years ago | report
Well, no band here, but I like to sing, so I guess I could just keep singing baby-related songs until he caught on. More than likely he’d just turn on the TV to drown me out. Lol!
posted by Poll Poster :: 12 years ago | report
Well I did it in the middle of the night to kinda confuse him I just snuggled up to him and started whispering to him I’m pregnant i’m pregnant after 10 mins he woke up kinda groggy and said what i’m like, i’m pregnant and he fell off the bed
posted by Serenity :: 12 years ago | report
I went and bought a few baby items (non-gender specific of course) and when he was doing the bills he came across the receipt. He asked, I acknowledged and he was thrilled.
posted by guest :: 12 years ago | report
Serenity and the poster after, you two are so sneaky! Lol! Serenity, think how much he would have reacted if you hadn’t given his subconscious a warning first! I like the bills idea too. I had thought about buying something, but the receipt is more subtle than just having the items lying around. Good ideas, folks!
posted by guest :: 12 years ago | report
I just always tell him (i.e. "I think I’m pregnant and will let you know when I find out for sure"). However some ideas might be:

Have your daughter (or you) hand him a baby doll and a baby doll diaper and tell him he needs to practice. :)

Lay a positive test meter where he will find it.

Talk about expanding the house (may not work in your case).

Well, I’m not too creative either apparently, but those are what came to mind. Good luck.

Well me and my 5 yr old son Bentley decided to do this went to the store ane bought letter crackers and spelled out baby on a plate
posted by guest :: 12 years ago | report
Well I\’m an artist so I drew a picture of a developing bavy and gave it to him
posted by guest :: 12 years ago | report
Oh my goodness, the letter crackers idea is adorable! And to the previous poster, I want to do something elaborately cute, but last time I just ended up telling him, like you. In the end, it is always special anyway. Oh, and he could use some practice with the diapers anyway, whether I’m pregnant or not!
posted by guest :: 12 years ago | report
Baby * sorry
posted by guest :: 12 years ago | report
To the artist: That is really neat! Do you think he’d recognize a stick baby? I could help my daughter draw a little stick picture of a family of four, I suppose! That could be cute!
posted by guest :: 12 years ago | report
Well I have a 2 yr old named Meckenzie so I had her help me I took a picture of her touching my stomche and then she went gave him the picture and asked dada see mommy big tummy there baby
posted by Alli :: 12 years ago | report
I missed the post from before from the gal who left the test on the sink. That’s how it happened last time--I hadn’t thrown the test away yet, and he saw it, but didn’t look at it because he figured it was negative. It was kind of funny, he was all prepared to comfort me, and I’m like, "We’re having a baby, Baby!" Lol!
posted by guest :: 12 years ago | report
Alli, that’s cute. Do you have a tripod? How did you take the picture of her touching your stomach?
posted by guest :: 12 years ago | report
No we had a professional do the pic of her touching
posted by guest :: 12 years ago | report
Oh, ok. That’s a good idea. I was wanting to get my daughter’s 2-yr pictures done anyway, so I could just ask them to do one of those too. Good suggestion! I love all of these!
posted by guest :: 12 years ago | report
Maybe help your daughter draw a 4-person picture and write "Our family" on top. Then put it one the fridge door so he’ll see it.

Oh goodness, I can’t keep up with all the great posts! I have so many ideas now! Not quite sure which angle I’ll take. Hopefully I am right and am pregnant. It will be easier for me not to botch the announcement this time if I already have a plan of action! Feel free to keep posting! I assure you, I am reading all of these, even if I won’t be able to keep up with responses! Thanks so much everyone! This is my favorite website ever!

posted by guest :: 12 years ago | report
Ahh, that is super sweet. Bless your hubby for being a nicu nurse, too. I’m sure he sees a lot of difficult things.

posted by Luna :: 12 years ago | report
I love Scrabble! He hates it! The only time he played it with me is when I was half unconscious after I had had my wisdom teeth removed, and even then I had to promise not to keep score! (Pretty sure I still beat him). Super cute idea, though. Good luck with your delivery!
posted by guest :: 12 years ago | report
We’ve been married 7 years, by the way, and yes, he has only played Scrabble with me once. How on earth did we end up together? Lol! Maybe I’ll make him play while I’m in labor! Can’t refuse a woman having contractions!
posted by guest :: 12 years ago | report

posted by jamie :: 12 years ago | report
Jamie, that’ funny. I think my hubby would be more like, "What’s with the doll?"
posted by guest :: 12 years ago | report
Genesis’ mommy: Don’t worry, it’s not fun, but it’s just one of those things you get through and forget about over time. Plus, you get something really great at the end! Hey, lots of us do it again!

Make some cinnamon rolls for him ( Pillsbury works), Put a card on the plate next to the roll that says. " Guess who has a bun in the oven?"

I like the episode of "I Love Lucy" where she tells Ricky (or tries to tell) they’re having a baby. If you’ve seen it, maybe that will spark some ideas.
