Hi! What do you think of Catherine May nn May? We LOVE the name May but we also really want to honour my mother who passed away when I was young. (Catherine) I know it will be confusing that she will be called by her middle name but May Catherine doesn’t really flow! Thanks!

I think May Catherine flows just fine, to be honest, but either way works. I thought I was opposed to the whole ’calling people by their middle name’ thing, then realized that I work with 2 men who go by their middle names. It does get confusing with official documents and professional certifications, but most of the time it’s OK.

I have a coworker who did this--she has always called her daughter by her middle name. Now her daughter is 12 and she hates it because it is so confusing at school, on tests, etc. She has started going by her first name now, and it is very awkward for her mom trying to get used to calling her the other name. If you want to call her May, just name her May Catherine. It is fine.
