Baby vs. Brother

My parents have 2 kids together (me and my younger sister), but got divorced back in 1999. My dad got remarried in 2004 and had a son in October 2005. They’re now having another son in June. They are wanting to name him Orla!! ORLA!!??! (Where my step-mom is from it’s a boy name) I don’t know what to do! This little baby will be teased SO much, but how can I get them hooked on another name, or can I? I would love some ideas! ~Amanda

Well, I’d start by telling them that Orla is and has always been a girl’s name. I’d tell them that it means "precious princess". Do they really want their little boy to have a girl’s name, even with THAT meaning. Would the like Aden (Aiden)? It is from the same origin.

Try and persuade them with something similar but super-boyish like Orwell.

I don’t think they would at all.. I thought about showing them the names on my list, and hope they would like at least one, even if they choose a name, that I had planned naming my future son.
I really don’t want them to name Orla, it’s just awful. I can find a million names that are better!! It doesn’t even have to be my taste, just nothing that horrible.
I’m so miserable, I don’t know what to think or do. (My 6 year old brother’s name is almost as awful)

Sorry I’m curious here, what’s the older brothers name? And your name is Amanda, which (sorry!) i don’t love by hey its a normal, steady, get-you-through-life kind of name. Was that all your mom, or did your dad really like that name as well? Is Orla all your stepmom, or is he the one who came up with it? if your dad likes Amanda-type names and not Orla, suggest a few Amanda names:

Michael
Matthew
David
Daniel
Jason
William
Robert
James

I think all of these are great names, regardless of if I love them or not, they are all exclusively male, strong, heroic type, some biblical, names.

Hey, I’m not loving my name either but you can’t say that it isn’t normal, right? It’s a typical name for my age. Nothing surprising about it!
My brother’s name is really special, so I’m not too comfortable posting it here. There might be some people I know, that don’t know about my step-mom’s pregnancy. I hope you respect that.
To give a little information, my name and my sister’s are both normal names. My parents only had Amanda chosen for me (Matthias for a boy). When my sister was born my mom wanted one name, my dad wanted Amelia, they chose my mom’s choice.

My brother’s name was chosen almost completely by my stem-mom (She’s Swedish) but funny enough Orla was chosen completely by my dad. (They might like William, but we know one William, I would hope they’d like Liam)
