Confusing vs. question

If you name your child after someone who’s named after someone, who are you really naming the child after? For example, if I name my son John because that’s my brother’s name, but he was named after our grandfather John, am I really naming my son after my grandfather? Thanks!

I would say both.

My middle name is Dale, it was my mothers middle name, and she was named after my great-uncle Dale. I say I am named after my mom and uncle.

Exactly. I don’t get why people do this. I say to give your child his/her own identity. If John named himself, that might be one thing...

If your asking about naming your child John then I wouldn’t unless it was spelt Jon or Jonathan. Otherwise I don’t see why naming your child after someone who is named after someone is an issue. Surely the real issue is whether you love the name.

No, we’re not planning on using John. And the connection is not as simple as brother and father. That’s just an example that wouldn’t be too confusing. I just want to know if people think the boy in my exmaple would be considered to be named after his uncle or his grandfather.

Also, what’s wrong with the name John?

I don’t see anything wrong with John. And if you name your child after your brother’s name- even if your brother was named after someone, in my oppinion, then the child is named after your brother...though I can also see how the child is named after both- or all. As for someone’s comment on giving them their own identity- in my family we usually just use middle names and give then their own first name...or use a different version of the first name (like Eleanor instead of Helen)and give them their own middle name for sure- that doesn’t take their identity away from them and I don’t see that there’s anyhing wrong at all with giving them a connection to family by using a famly name...not a fan of Jr’s though, though it certainly makes writing out family tree’s easier when there’s seven generations of the same name >.>

Nothings wrong with the name John but from what you told us it sounded like you were naming your child John so we gave you true opinions. If you didn’t want us to give true opinions I wouldn’t post a question like this on this website. Remember what may be confusing to you is even more confusing to us.

No, it is not naming your son after your grandfather. Besides what’s the difference, if you want to name your son John just name him John and name him after whomever you want.
