unisex vs. names

Why are people in this world so worried when a mother asks about or names their daughter a unisex name like Kendall, Taylor , Addison , Riley etc maybe boys wouldn’t want to be named such feminine names and that’s why they are better on girls! I do think using very masculine names like Dylan , Logan or Ryan is crazy but what is so bad about unisex names!Meredith , Alison , Evelyn were all boys names at one time but are used more on girls now! you know why? because no boy wants to be named Evelyn!

I have always wondered this also :) my daughters name is Riley I am aware that it is a boys and girls name , but i don’t care! I get a lot of compliments on her name and she has never had any trouble!

I don’t see a problem with unisex names. I just like the combo of unisex with a name that indicates the child’s gender.

I know a unisex first name and feminine middle name is pretty , but people always so your naming your daughter Kendall, Riley that’s a boy name!

I’ve always though Riley and Rowan were beautiful names for girls, tomboyish but still girly. And same for Morgans. My name is Ashley and I’ve heard a couple guys named Ashley and they groan about how it’s a "chick’s" name all the time, and I often have to comment it’s a boy’s name really and they need to watch Gone With the Wind.

I know some unisex names are very pretty :) like Ashley , Kelly , Evelyn etc , but whenever you use a unisex name people say that name is so masculine!

I know I know a lot of girls with unisex and none of them get made fun of for it :) people are like it’s so wrong to name a girl Madison because it means son of but not everyone is worried about that.

I know what you mean I have two kids both girls Britton(5)and Ryann pronounced Ry-Ann (8) and all my friends were like it sounds to masculine for a little girl back when I was pregnant they also thought Britton was kind masculine but neither of my kids have ever been picked on about there names!

ok I don’t mind unisex names ie, Riley taylor Avery and such its when women want to name there daughters James Dylan Spencer Saywer Logen, Elliot, its getting out of hand and I just feel that if its not stopped soon there will be no just boys names left and everything will sound feminine I mean Kendell didn’t seem femine until a bunch of girls had it so what’s to stop Logan from becoming the same thing.

actually Kendall has always sounded feminine to me! I use to be a All My Children fan and a girl on there was named Kendall

unisex names are fine, boy names on girls is bad and completely different from unisex names. :)

To be fair though, there was a girl who got beat up for having the "boy" name Randi. She was in middle school. I don’t have the link anymore, but I’m sure you can find it by googling it.

Speaking for myself, I really couldn’t care less what the parents name their daughter in these cases. You can name her Thor, God of Thunder for all I care. What bothers me is that the available pool of great names for boys is seriously shrinking in the process. Some of the very names you mention that were once boy names but are now used almost exclusively for girls names (Meredith, Evelyn, Ashley....) proves my point. No one wanted to use those names any longer for boys BECAUSE the girls had bogarted those names. There are SOOOOO many beautiful names for girls. Why must people pilfer from the already much smaller pool of boy names? People who would love to name their sons great names like Emerson, Elliot, Emory, Ryan, etc... are now being made to feel that they cannot do so. It’s unfair to the boys. That’s the problem.

To counter the previous poster, plenty of boys are named Sawyer, Ryan, Emerson, Elliot, Emory, Rowan, Riley, etc. despite their widespread usage on girls.

While I personally don’t care for a lot of the unisex names, there are some that I really like. I would only use Chandler on a girl, but I would use Riley, Jordan, and Rowan on either gender. The majority of unisex names (Hayden, Logan, Sawyer, Sutton, Finley, Skyler, etc) I would only use on boys. I wouldn’t change the spelling of a name to make it "more feminine" if I were to use it on a girl. I don’t insult parents who choose to use a unisex name on a girl. The way I see it, what they name their kid doesn’t affect me. I’m probably never going to meet them in my life. I’ll give my opinion and move on.

That said, I seriously disagree with people naming their daughter obviously masculine names like James, etc. And I think that the polls on here that claim to want to do that are fake and posted only to stir up trouble. But, taking a look at the SSA top baby names lists for the past decade or so reveals that names like Andrew were in the top 1000 for girls, above some much more feminine names.

Girls having masculine names isn’t a new trend. Especially here in the south, family names are often given without regard to gender. It isn’t uncommon to meet a girl named Mary Michael and a boy named Stacy. It’s just a part of life.
