Last vs. Names
When my husband and I got married I kept my last name and now i am pregnant and their has been a huge fight between our parents. My last name is Porter and his last name is McPeterson. We need last names that use only the letters in our last names. the only one so far that we have come up with is McPorter

Thanks we like that. We also want names that are using the letters in a random order. In the movie Father of the Bride Part 2, Annie and Brian are thinking of names using the letters in thier last names. They came up with Zinman and Zankman and I’ve always thought that they were really cool.

Nor do we want regular names that anybody else would have as their last names. We want unique and original.

Not to be mean, but its stupid. What happens if you divorce and want your old names back? Your child is stuck with your made up last name? Hyphenate it. But don’t just make a name up.

The baby should have your husbands last name.

We thought about that but we never changed last names anyway so they wouldn’t change and Porter-McPeterson would be a long name for a kid to spell.

So you just want your kid to have a last name that isn’t the same as you or your husband? Why?? So he can go through his life being asked so whose your real dad?

Thats the thing if we give Kaysee his last name there will be a huge fight between our parents and they don’t get along real well as it is so that would only cause more chaos between them.

Pick one or the other, but I think your child should have the fathers last name, especially since your married.

We are definately making up a last name. Another reason for making one is we love the name Kaysee Brooke but to us Kaysee Brooke Porter or Kaysee Brooke McPeterson just never really seemed to fit together.

They need to grow up! Children’s lives are so difficult today. Why would you add to it by making people think he didn’t belong to your husband. B/c honestly, if I saw that your son’s last name was different than your husbands and your last name I would think that your husband was his step-father. While there is nothing wrong with being a step-father having whispers that your mom was married to your dad at the time of your birth but you don’t have his name so she must have cheated is a heavy burden to carry.

I think Porterson is nice. To some of the other posters, just because children taking the father’s last name is tradition, doesn’t mean the poll poster has to do it. It is 2012 after all. Good luck, poll poster!

Thanks! My cousin said that EVERYONE in the family needed to stop fighting and we should make up a name. We took his advice because he has always been one of my best friends and we trust his opinion.

What does it being 2012 have to do with ANYTHING? I’ve never understood that. Kids should have their parents last name, simple as that. It’s your choice in the end, but it seems kind of stupid.

"Kids should have their parents last name." This is your opinion. Do you speak for everyone?

As a child who grew up with a different last name than her parents, it’s hard for the child. I wanted to have the same last name as my parents, but by the time I was old enough to express that, it would have been a huge headache to change it. Go with Porter as a middle name and McPeterson as a last name or hyphenate the little one’s last name. No one can complain if he has both of your last names.

As far as the hyphenated name being too long, I don’t think that’s a big deal. I went to school with a guy whose last names were longer, and everyone just called him JST (his first initial and the initials of his last names). He loved it. GL!

Thats the thing . We dont want her to initial her name or have a really long last name. It would be hard to write Kaysee Porter-McPeterson in cursive.

I think as all the letters in Porter are also in McPeterson it would be good to go with something like Porterson to show both names represented clearly
