I think that you need to accept that no one is going to pronounce Genevieve that way no matter how you spell it. I would just use it with the regular spelling or pick a different name. She’ll be so miserable if she has to go through her entire life making that correction, and I garuntee you no one will get it right. Genevieve pron JEN-eh-veev is such a pretty name, I don’t know why you would butcher such a pretty, french name like that.

I like Genevieve & Joie..Grr, people are misinformed. Your pronunciation IS the French pronunciation, so it’s NOT butchering a pretty French name, but you know that. Either pronunciation is correct, both are great, so go with the one you like. It’s not like the spelling is butchered and incomprehensible; then, that may pose a huge problem. She is not going to be miserable having to clarify it. I’ve done it all my life, and so have a few of my friends, and trust me, we’re fine..it’s not bad at all. Plus we get a laugh out of it every once in a while.

Love the name and the pronunciation. I hope you have a french or at least neutral sounding last name. It might sound funny if it isn’t. I mean, Genevieve Smith or Jones would sound fine but Genevieve Goldman might get a few giggles. By the way, congrats on the baby!!

But unless you live in france, NO ONE IS GOING TO USE THE FRENCH PRONUNCIATION. And your daughter will just sound pretentious when she corrects everyone. But then...perhaps that false sense of sophistication is what you’re going for.

I love BOTH! If you pronounce Genevieve the French way (which is the correct way, IMO), so will everyone else. She may get some teachers on the first day of school asking her how she pronounces her name, just to clarify. But that’s not the end of the world. And speaking as a teacher, there are a LOT more names out there that are just plain contrived looking or butchered b/c parents need to feel like their making their kid "unique" by giving them an odd name. They don’t get that they their kid will turn out a certain way if they’re not proper socialized. You CLEARLY don’t have this problem. Both of your names are très jolis. I tend to think Genevieve Victoire flows better. Genevieve Joie, though also VERY pretty, has too much of the same sound to it.

I also really like:
Genevieve Aimée
Genevieve Amélie
Genevieve Eugénie

Genvi

The names are pretty, I don’t think anyone is disputing that...but it’s going to be tough having to pronouncer and spell her name EVERYWHERE she goes, especially b/c the American version of Genevieve is gaining major popularity (my younger daughter is Genevieve.) I think the majority of us are just warning you that it’s annoying to have a name that is always mispronounced. I saw a poll on here today where a baby’s name has been mispronounced so much in it’s first year of life that the mother is considering changing it! Just think on this one and consider all the angles, that’s all we’re saying.

thanks for all the advice but i like the French pronunciation of Genevieve my last name has a French sound to it and it sounds good with that pronunciation of the name and i know i will have to make occasional corrections but i don’t think it will be so awful for her and if she really does hate it she can just use the American pronunciation when she grows up
