Help me vs. understand

I am the mother of an Adeline, pronounced the traditional way: add-uh-line. I just don’t understand the need to transform this beautiful name into something made up and silly, like Adelynn or Adalyn. But I know there are lots of women that love those versions of the name. Help me understand the appeal. Why take a perfectly wonderful name and change it? What am I missing? Same goes for lots of traditional names.

It’s all about the value of the unusual I guess. I find it cheapens names though. If they’re so bothered about being unique, try a name that doesn’t have to have it’s spelling changed to be different. Obviously the differences between Sofia and Sophia may depend on things like ethnic background and accents which I’m fine with.

Different tastes in spellings/pronunciations. I see nothing wrong with the changes as long as the spellings are absolutely horrid. Some names have different variations when looked up online. As long as the child won’t have difficulties spelling their name in the future or be made fun of, it doesn’t really matter how it’s spelled or said.

The thinking is that a more unusual spelling makes it a more unusual name, and therefore set apart from others with the same name. They’re trying to combine the two styles (unique and traditional). Personally I agree with you that it doesn’t work.

I think that a lot of people think that those names are beautiful and want to update/modernize them. Lots of names are spinoffs/missing the first letters of their original names...Madison/Addison, Madelyn/Adelyn, Gabriella/Briella, Kayla/Ayla, Olivia/Livia. I don’t think they’re cheapened, just different variations. Think of them as a compliment to the name you love and enjoy that your daughter’s classic name is now the unique name ;)

I think sometimes changing a name to a made up spelling does cheapen it. I don’t mind shortening of names though. I think Liv alone is gorgeous but I hate the name Olivia, there are far too many.

Personally, I like the ending lyn better than line. In that particular case, I don’t think it cheapens the name to spell it Adalyn or Madalyn. I don’t really think its unique to do that but it is getting the pronouncition I like without a horrid spelling of the name.

Question...why do you even care enough to post about it? You like your daughters name thats good, now let other people name their children what they want with out your judgemental and rude opinion being thrown around making them feel offended. This website is supposed to be used to help expectant parents in the baby naming process not for ridiculous rants. Go blog about it. This isn’t the place.

^agreed!

^^I agree^^ Don’t worry about it. You named your daughter something you thought was beautiful, but there are some people who can’t stand Adeline, even if you do pronounce it "the traditional way". I think you ought to take your stuck-up attitude elsewhere

Mispellings and mispronunciations seem to be rampant nowadays. The trend to add a "lyn/lynn" to a name or word is quite popular. I think it has something to do with the popular sound of names ending in en/an/in etc... It DOES cheapen the classic quality of the name and the new modern versions will soon lack the uniqueness when if so many people continue to choose them.

It’s interesting to me that this person is only mentioning alternate spellings. Could be worse. There are children called @ in the world.

The original poster wasn’t rude or stuck up in my opinion but some of the replies here leave a lot to be desired. The rudeness must come from those who already have an Adelyn/Adalyn/Madelyn. She asked us to help her understand the appeal of changing a name’s traditional spelling. There have only been a few replies so far that were intelligent enough to give the answer to her question.

I have to agree with the poster who stated that certain sounds are quite trendy right now and "line" has been surpassed by "lyn".

Understand is a silly name! Help Me is better!

Sounds like the original poster is upset that there are people who prefer Adelyn to her spelling of Adeline. Get over it, everyone has their own opinions and it’s not the end of the world if a few people don’t agree with yours

I think people just want to be unique. No harm in that. Although, it does make it confusing when it comes to pronunciation. Addalyn and Adeline are two distinct sounding names, imo.

It is really irritating that posts like this one get so much attention. So you don’t like how someone chooses to spell their child’s name....GET OVER IT! That is not your child. I, personally, prefer Adelyn (add-uh-LYNN) over your spelling and pronunciation. Does that make me a bad person, who "cheats" my kids out of a good name? NO! Get over yourself.

And, how can a name be "misspelled" anyway? Names are not nouns...they are not words (unless you are talking about Skye or Starr...then those are still not misspellings, they are names.)
