Nicknames vs. ???

I am wondering what kind of experience other people have had with nicknames...either their own or their child’s. If you want to avoid your child being called by a nickname that is common for their name (example - Sam for Samantha or Vicky for Victoria or Gabby for Gabriella) is it really possible? I know you can keep correcting people, but what happens when they get to school? There are so many girl names that I love but really don’t like the nicknames that go along with them. I’m trying to decide if I still consider them or just avoid them.

My daughter is Kathryn Mary but we call her Kerry. It’s a combo of both names. The only ones that questioned it at first was the nurses when she was born. They kept calling her Katie but they quit it after I corrected them. No one has questioned it in school.

My name is Kari and I have always been a little crazy...always the craziest in every group of friends I have ever had. My nick name has always been scary Kari. I probably would have been called that more had my name been spelt Carrie....(cause of that old horror movie)

You can’t control nicknames. Your child will be called the name you want at home, but kids at school, teachers, etc. will maybe use the nicknames you hate. Also, they might be teased with something popular in the media at the time. My name is Blaire, and when the Blair Witch movie came out...I heard it EVERYDAY. You just never know!

Well, I don’t know. My full name is Rebecca, but I’ve been called Becky since I was born. However, my aunt has a three-year-old boy named Andrew and just keeps reminding everyone hat he’s Andrew, not Andy or Drew. I don’t think it really is avoidable.

I have always been Jennifer. A few people here and there tried to call me Jen or Jenny I told them I didnt care for it and never had a problem.

My son is Matthew and he has never been anything but Matthew.. a few of his friends do call him MJ because of our last name.. but only his close friends and with his permission.

You can control it to a certain point. Your child may decide to allow people to use a nickname when they are in school. But by that time I think the child should have a choice.

It is possible to avoide nicknames. One of my good friends in highschool was named Adrianna and her friends shortened it to Adri, but she didn’t like it and told them not to call her it, so everyone called her Adrianna.

My son’s name is Alexander. At home, we call him Alexander. If I wanted him to be named just Alex, I would have called him Alex. But, people do call him that at school, and I don’t really mind if he likes it as a nn, but to me he will always be Alexander.
