Is Gabriella vs. too popular?
My husband and I finally decided on the name Gabriella. We don’t want a super popular name (i.e. top 10), but we were okay with it being #50. However, a friend just told me Gabriella was the name of the lead female star in high school musical. We think this name will probably explode. Any thoughts? Thanks.

I don’t think so. Most of the people who watch that movie are too young to have kids right now...so I don’t think that it will be an issue.

I’ve never seen High School Musical. The target age group for that movie seems to be 5-12 year olds, so I wouldn’t think it would affect the names given to new babies much, but Miley has really exploded in popularity and I think her show is targeted to the same age range.
Gabriella does have the right elements to make a comeback. It’s got the option of cute, popular nicknames like Bree and Ella. However, I don’t really see it as top 10 material. It’s too fussy for a lot of people, plus the possibility of Gabby as a nickname seems to deter a lot of people.

I’m from Down under, (Australia), and Gabriella isn’t too popular. Many people with the name do use the nn Gabby though, but I’m not too sure if it would be popular in America. If you like ti, use it! It’s beautiful and classy!

If you read thru enough postings on this website a lot of people are considering Gabriella and the nn Ella is way popular. I know of three Ella’s just in my own immediate friends and family.

Be careful to check the popularity of other names that are virtually the same. When you add the # of babies named Gabriella AND Gabrielle it puts the name up in the top 5 (at least in my state...check the social security web site for your state and find out). I love the name, but like you, don’t want something super popular.
