We love the name Ariel for our son, but we’re afraid he might get teased about the mermaid. What gives?

I like it as a boys name, but I would definitely not use it. I think he will definitely get teased and called a mermaid and princess. Not worth the risk, unfortunately.

So many fools use boys names on girls in usa unfortunately, Uriel could work its very similar but not used for girls.

I’m afraid I think he will definitely get teased. There is a little girl named Ariel who lives near me, and she gets teased for her name on occasion, so I think it would be much, much worse for a boy.

In my opinion I think that Ariel is a really feminine name and wont suit your son very well. How about Aurelio? Its similar and more of a masculine name?

My sister named her son Ariel and it was the worse decision she ever made :\ she even considered changing his name.

I went to high school with a boy named Ariel but he pronounced it Are-EE-El
He ended up going by "Ears"(The kid had humongous ears" because he got teased for his name a lot.
If you really want to use Ariel, use it as his middle name. He’ll thank you for it.

I like the suggestion of Uriel but I worry that that could get teased to urinal. Still better than mermaid or princess though.

A friend and I have a discussion about this a lot - she loves the name Ariel for a boy (Ah-ree-elle rather than Air-ee-elle) and I maintain you can’t use it for a boy in America or the UK (other places too I imagine).
You could consider Arieh (Ah-ree-eh or Ah-ree-ay) it has almost the same meaning and sound but no mermaid association.

How about Arie? (pr. R-ee) I’ve heard it on 2 different men and think it’s a very handsome name, much more so than the very feminine Ariel!

I agree with the above posters. How about Noel (No-uhl) or Arie?
