I wouldn’t say Helena is more modern at all. Actually, Helena is quite vintage. I think it fell from favor for awhile and Helen became more popular. Now the pendulum has swung again. Helena is again in favor and Helen less so. I like both. There are at least three perfectly legitimate pronunciations for Helena. So I wouldn’t say it will be mispronounced. But you may not always get the pronunciation you prefer. That’s definitely something to consider.

I pronounce Helena like Helen-uh not Hel-ay-nuh. I don’t know which you plan on using. I actually like Helen better though!

To me, Helen is all 1950s. I’d go for Helena. That being said, you should try to figure out what pronunciation is most popular in your area to see if people will say it your way. It’d be annoying for her if no one ever said it right.

Thanks everyone! We’d be saying it HELEN-ah. I’d never heard it said hell-AY-nah until a few years ago, so I think HELEN-ah is more popular here, but I still think some people would mispronounce it. More comments/opinions are appreciated.

I’ve heard Helena pronounced Hel-en-ah, Hel-ay-nah, and Hel-ee-nah. I prefer Helena as a first name and Helen as a middle name.
