Zelda vs. Yes vs. No

My boyfriend and I are due to have a baby girl next month. We are both video game fanatics and we really love the name Zelda (after The Legend of Zelda game). What do you guys think of the name? We also want to give her a unique/edgy/meaningful middle name but aren’t sure what to pair with Zelda. Any input/suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks! ~Paige & Will

Zelda is awesome, I wish I was brave enough to use it!

No, really?

Zelda was also the name of F.Scott Fitzgerald’s wife, though the video game is a much nicer reference:) I like it! Personally, I think it needs a soft sounding mn, like Zelda Elise, but that is not unique and edgy. Hmm, if there was something feminine and soft sounding that also met your criteria, that would be my winner. Good luck!

Zelda, no.
Tomb Raider, no.
GTA, no

You wouldn’t name your child any other game, so don’t do it with this one.

I’m not a huge fan, sorry.

I love this name SO much. However, I associate it with Zelda Fitzgerald. It kind of irks me that most people think of a video game. Does no one read anymore??

Zelda is a nice name! It was used for a video game character, but was a regular name long before that (like Mario, Luigi, Kirby, Adeleine, and other video game names). It means "blessed, happy" in Yiddish. Besides, people name their babies after Disney princesses sometimes, and this is a princess that’s extremely skilled in magic and is also a ninja. So, I don’t see why using this name would be any different from that. And, barring any associations, this is a really pretty name! I do think she would need a soft middle name, though. How about:

Zelda Brielle

Zelda Faith

Zelda Rosalie

Zelda Vivian

Zelda Miriam

Zelda Hope

Zelda Susan

Zelda Elisabeth

Zelda Fay

Something along those lines. Good luck, love the name! :-)

It seems a bit odd to name your child after a game, but I’ve people who’ve named their child after favorite sports teams or the places they met or even the place where the child was conceived, so if the game is meaningful to both of you, go for it. Another positive is that the name is unique and easy to say and spell.

I agree with poster 4. You might want to look for a "softer" middle name, like Rose or Jane or Leigh or Mae.

We are aware that the name Zelda is not just from the video game. I’m a writer, so I am very aware that it was the name of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s wife and it also has ties into Greek mythology. I just mentioned that it was from the game because I thought that would be the most recognized reference.

Never heard of the game or of the historical significance. Just by itself (since I have no associations with it), I don’t care for it. Kind of sounds space-y to me. But, it isn’t horrible.

Thank you, Ms. Lyons, your suggestions were very helpful! We like Zelda Brielle a lot and it’s in the running! :)
