Kenzie for vs. a boy?
Does gender really matter in names anymore? My nephew Connor has tons of boys and girls in his school who have the same name including a girl Connor. They’re all growing up with that and they’re all okay with it. I liked Kenzie for a girl but now I think it’s great for a boy, too. If it’s too nicknamey, what could be a full name?

I like some modern names but definitely not most. Kenzie sounds quite feminine to me. You should try a name like Keegan, Cooper, Zane, Teagan, Tatum.

I think Mackenzie was a boys name a while back...but I feel like once a name goes "unisex" it has gone to the girls.

Kenzie is a traditionally masculine nickname for the traditionally masculine name Mackenzie. And yes, I prefer both on a boy.

This name sounds soooo boyish to me. I used it as a name for an extra in a story I was writing once, who was a boy. :) I like it on its own! Not too nicknamey!

But people use names I think are too masculine for girls all the time. The girl Connor, for instance. And it doesn’t scar them or boys like my nephew who have the same name. So I’m not sure if people’s perceptions of gender is a big deal. After all, the child knows their own gender and it’s pretty obvious when you see them.
It just seems like there are so many who names used for both. I’m thinking that the kids he’d be around wouldn’t even bat an eye about Kenzie on a boy. And adults are polite to kids about their names, at least the ones in my nephew’s school.
Thanks for your input. I’m really interested in people’s opinions on this.

Okay, I cross posted with a couple of people. So would Kenzie or MacKenzie (McKenzie?) sound better? MacKenzie seems more complete, but I kind of like the sound of Kenzie better.

Kenzie IS a boy’s name. It’s just been butchered into a girl’s name.

I think it’s fine on its own. Kenzie is great, and he could go by Kenny or Ken if he wants, too! :)

I think Kenzie is fine on a boy. I think I like Kenzy better, just to make it "appear" more masculine. But I think it is fine.
Gender roles are not affected by their name.

I think I might like Kenzie alone best. Mackenzie is fine too, but I think Kenzie is best on its own.

I feel Kenzie works. It WAS a boys name first! If you feel it is too nicknamey. try Kensington. Makenzie.

Same dilemma here! I like the name Avery for a boy but almost everyone I had talked to said it’s already over the fence as a girl’s name and I shouldn’t use it for a boy. But it IS a boy’s name!
I would say use it. Kenzie is like Jamie so I wouldn’t say it’s incomplete. There’s no point in naming him MacKenzie when he’s going by Kenzie and you like Kenzie more but used MacKenzie just for the "fullness" to it.

Avery is also much better on a boy, I think. It sounds friendly and approachable on a boy, but it somehow sounds foreign and aloof on a girl. I especially hate it when people label these names as "unisex", and then act as if they can’t be used on boys anymore. If you wanna give your daughter a boy name, fine, it’ll irk me, but I’ll try to keep my yap shut about it. Just don’t act as if it can never be used on boys anymore.
