Nicolas / Nicholas vs. Nikolas vs. Nickolas

We’re having a spelling problem. We live in the USA, where Nicholas is the most common. But we’re constantly going to visit family in other countries, where hubby’s from, and the common way is Nicolas and K spellings. Nicolas, so far, is not a favorite. And hubby really wants a K somewhere. Nickolas would be more of a compromise, seeing as it isn’t a common spelling in either place. Does Nikolas look weird? I’m so sorry if I’m not making any sense! Thank you in advance!

My fave is Nicolas, but Nikolas does look strange, honestly. The most common spelling where you live is the spelling I’d use. So, regardless, you should spell it Nicholas, as that is the most common spelling in the country in which you live, and the spelling that will cause him the least problems in the future, as he grows up. Good luck!

I happen to love the Nikolas spelling. If you want to see several other spelling options, here’s a link for you:

I would go with Nicholas for the same reasons as poster 2 cited. You should go with where he will spend the majority of his time. If you think he will most likely go to school, work, and live in the US, then I would go with the American spelling of Nicholas.

Nicklaus is cool. Old names get boring.

We went with Nikolas and love it. You have to usually clarify the spelling of the name no matter how you spell it.
