My first thought is that it would be a boy’s nickname for something else. Not sure what, though.

White water rafting on the Tully River!

Surname. Only. Never would consider it for a given name, too unattractive.

Loving the honesty. :) Thank you.

I don’t like it, seems incomplete. I like Trully for a girl or Truett for a boy.

Hmmm... Okay. Is there a name that would suit that would make it more complete do you think? And use Tully as a nickname??

Girls Tulia or Tulip

Any "tul" prefix names that would suit a boy? I can think of lots for a girl.
Tulip.
Tullia
Tullara
Tullaura
Are just a few off the top of my head.. but "Tul" prefix names for a boy - coming up a big fat blank - apart from Tullius and Tullian.
Thanks to all so far.

Apologies to the three posters immediately above me.. we must have all nearly entered at the same time. Thank you for your contributions.

Also Tulani (apparently a boys name but sounds feminine to me)

I agree... no offence - but the "i" endings to me sound more feminine than masculine to me also. Is there any boy name out there at all that you could match with Tully - with a "tul" prefix and maintain the masculinity? I am having trouble finding any myself.

So many of these name suggestions sound completely made up to me in order to accommodate the nickname Tully. It seems like a backwards way of choosing a name to me. Is there some significance to the name Tully for you?

Can only think of Talison

They are not made up, they are names of various origins and ethnic backgrounds

Basically I am liking the name Tully - but am wondering/feeling it may not appear as a complete name. I am wondering what alternatives if any exist that would make it seem a more complete name. I am also wondering if it comes across as more masculine or feminine. Just wanting to test the "general public" waters before endowing the name on a child without first knowing how it is viewed. Hope that makes sense.

I think for a girl there are nice names that you could use Tully as a nn for, but for boys the names are weird and I think you would be better to use Tully as the name itself. The only Tully I know is a little girl and I didn’t like it when I first heard it, thinking surely it had to be a nn and there was a "proper" name behind it ... Would I use the name for a little girl no, a nn maybe. For a boy maybe.

Sorry, I didn’t mean to say they ARE all made up. They just sound like such a stretch. I guess it just makes more sense to me to go with Tully and be done with it.

Tullon nn Tully! :)

Tully reminds me of coffee
posted by guest :: 10 years ago | report
Coffee huh? :) As I have never been a coffee drinker I can’t begin to understand. But, that’s interesting. That’s what I am struggling with is Tully a "proper" name on it’s own or does it need something extra - as suggested above like Tullon? On the other hand - I know a Nikki - who is a Nikki - not a Nikola or anything else - and her name seems complete to me. Like it or hate it - is Tully a complete name to you? And does it feel more boy or more girl ( so far I am seeing more boy - I think). Thanks for all the comments and suggestions too by the way. Much appreciated.

Boy, I think. And just Tully makes as much sense to me Tullon, which I’ve never even heard of.

Tully’s is a brand of coffee, by the way.

Okay. Thank you for the coffee/Tully connection response. :D I’ve never heard of it before. I guess it doesn’t stop people here naming their kids McKenzie which is a brand of baking products - including Bicarb Soda. Thank you all so much for all your honest responses. Think I will mull over it a little longer. We still have a few weeks to decide which name we will be choosing. Wishing you all a great day.

My name is Tully and I’m a girl so me personal I think it’s a great name. Even if my friend’s call me Tulley the way people from Birmingham say it. There is not many way’s for people to take the mickey out of the name!!!

Tully is a great name. Stand alone name. Tully is my name.

First of all, and second of all. My daughter is named Tully (which is her complete name) but I got it from someone who was named Natalie and her nn was Tully. Also, it is aligned with simpler names such as Polly, Betty, sally etc.
