Is Aubrey really that popular? vs. yes vs. no
I have been working with children for over 10 years. And I have never met anyone named Aubrey before. But on this site everyon says the name is so popular and overused. Is it really that popular? Hubby and I love it for our daughter, so it is still useable?

It is #15 on the SSA list for popularity in 2012. It would probably be even higher than that if you counted the different spellings.

Yes, it is. I will get the exact statistics for you, but I believe it was ranked around #15 of all baby names in the US last year. It’s definitely been on the rise in the last few years - 5 years ago it was ranked much lower, so it’s no wonder if you haven’t met too many little girls with this name yet. There DEFINITELY will be in 5 years when girls born now are starting school - the numbers don’t lie.
Not to mention, the alternate spelling Aubree is also extremely popular, and other alternate spellings are used as well, like Aubrie and Aubri. I personally would not use a super common name - I grew up with one I hated being one of several in all my classes. This sucks - I’ve ruled out a few of my favorite names for the reason - but it’s just something I feel strongly about. A lot of parents do still use the really popular names, but you do have to know that she will run into many other Aubrey’s in her life.

Ok - to give you an idea - Aubrey was #15 in 2012, #44 in 2010, and #153 in 2005. Definitely trending up and has made huge jumps recently. Aubree was #60 in 2012 and #223 in 2010 - also a major difference.

I’ve never met an Aubrey either. In my opinion, even if it is pretty popular, if you really like it, use it. I think it’s a pretty name.

You’ve never met them because they’ve only just been born. That’s why the statistics exist - so that we don’t have to rely on anecdotal experience to determine how much a name is currently being used.

I only know one Aubrey and she is adorable! I think that if you want to use the name then use it. The name is adorable and I don’t think you should be worried about popularity. My name is made up and it sometimes bothers me because no one can pronounce it properly and so having a "popular" sometimes isn’t all that bad.
Hope I helped :)

I’ve only known one Aubrey and I went to high school with him. But I think the rankings don’t lie, so if you don’t want a popular name, Aubrey might not be for you.
