Truly vs. Merit vs. Darling

We have four children and are looking for an unusual word name for our soon-to-be addition. The three listed are our top 3, followed by Drummer (for a boy), Quill (boy), Basil (boy/girl), Wit (boy/girl), and Bay (boy/girl). Other suggestions along these lines are welcome! The favorites from our last poll were True, Bay, Basil, and Wit (I like the spelling Whit as suggested but that takes away from the word). We’ve changed "True" to "Truly." Thanks!

Give your kid a NAME not a word. Don’t give kids more ammunition for teasing/bullying.

I thoroughly agree with the first poster.

That being said, I LOVE Merritt for a girl. Not fond of the spelling Merit. Truly and Darling are NOT names and should not be used... honestly the kid will just be bullied.

I’ve heard Bay for a girl although I’m not crazy about it. I wouldn’t use it for a boy. Basil is very ehhh... I’d use it for a boy if at all. Wit is a terrible choice. Definitely opens him up for teasing. Drummer is even worse.

How about Chase/Chance or normal word names? For girls, Charity, Felicity, and Mercy are good options.

The definition of a name is a word. A name is a type of word, an identifier. Give yourself a pat on the back for trying, at least.

We like these. We’ve named 6 children between us and none have ever complained or had a problem.

I asked for suggestions, not opinions on our naming style.

If you insist on giving them a word (there is a difference between a name and a word, but in your words, give yourself a pat on the back for trying) at least give them a somewhat normal name. All of your, minus Merritt (for a boy) and Basil (also for a boy) are extremely bad.

You’ve named 6 children? You said you only have four...if you’re going to make a fake poll keep the lies straight.

I don’t know how old everyone on here is but I’m fairly young and bullying in todays schools isn’t nearly as bad as everyone seems to think. There are so many unique names today children arent interested in who’s names what. My vote is Truly I love it!

I said we have named 6 children between us, WE have four children.

Anything can be a name as long as it’s given to something. My trashcan can have a name. As long as I use it as its identifier, that’s what makes it a name. I studied linguistics in college and I also know how to use a dictionary.

We like Reed/Read but it’s the name of my nephew, who I named.

I know it might be plain for you, but Melody is so pretty. What about Sterling, Steele, Aria, Wren, Harbor, Reed, Dune, Verity, or Edelweiss.

Who is bullied for having a name like Merit? I bet half the kids in schools don’t even know that’s a word. There are tons of Wills, Graces, Reids, Olives, Roses, etc. I don’t really see the difference.

My vote is for Merit. I like it a lot and it just has a lovely sound.

I LOVE Wren, thank you. Unfortunately, my partner thinks having two birds in one family is too much.

I still do like Reverie but we might sit on it, in case we have another child. It just doesn’t feel like the name for this baby, you know? It does look so nice, though.

Nobody said Merit was going to get bullied. Truly definitely will. Maybe not in elementary school, but by high school? Um, yeah. Plus, no way any employer is ever going to take that name seriously on a job application. I would honestly toss that application right in the trash and many other employers would too. But if that’s something you want to do to your child, go right ahead.

What high school did you go to? Nobody in high school is going to pick on a person because of their name and nobody in high school would care what others think of their name. I definitely wouldn’t want to work for a person like you, have a seat honey.
