Horrible vs. Okay vs. Handsome

My husband and I wanted to name our little boy diesel after my husbands best friend who recently died in combat. We love the name but some people think that is sounds silly. Is it really that bad? -the richmonds

It’s really, REALLY bad. Names like Diesel, Ace, etc... are just silly. I’m all for unique names. But these are just not names at all. Nicknames, maybe. Given names, not so much.

I think it is cute. It certainly goes along the lines of some of the names being used today. Axel, Creed, Cruz, etc. If you love it, use it! If you don’t, you will always regret it. Take it from someone who has been there.

Well diesel is a type of gas so I guess that’s why you’re getting negative reactions. Was Diesel the guy’s name?

The thought is nice but the actual name isn’t. Maybe use the guy’s surname, or middle name, or hometown...something.

Vin Diesel

Personally, I’d use it as a middle name and not a first name.

What about Vin Diesel? I’m not sure what that means. Remember, Diesel is not part of his birth name either.

His name was Diesel Alexander Martin. - richmonds

You could switch the names and call your son Alexander Diesel. That would be honoring your friend.

I think you should save it for a girl and name her Dieselle.

Use it as a nn if you are worried. My brother’s name is Conner but he is called Crash. He always wore his bike helmet around when he was a toddler (I mean everywhere). A bank teller asked him if his name was Crash and he told him yes and it just stuck.

I think it is adorable!

The fact that an actor is using it as a stage name does not make it better. I would use the Alexander part of his name, or Martin. If he was military wouldn’t most people have called him Martin anyway?

I love it, I love the sentiment and I love the name quite frankly. I think it is very handsome and very unique, best of luck :)

Id use it as a middle name.

Alexander and Martin are both great choices. Diesel is ridiculous.

Wow, people. I know this site is about giving your opinions, but tone it down a notch! A name may not be your favorite, or a name you would ever choose, but stop for a minute and really just think about the name knowing that the parents really like it! Geez.

I don’t think the name is bad. I think with Vin Diesel being as well known as he is, people won’t have as much pause when they hear the name as they would if you named him Kerosene or Gasoline, for example. I don’t really think he’d be too teased for the name. It’s edgy, and spunky. And it has meaning to you. That said, it’s not the most serious name (ie. it’s hard to imagine a President Diesel...but who knows, in 30 years from now Diesel might be common place), but it’s not a terrible name. One other option to consider would be to find a name that is similar but maybe more neutral and use Diesel as a pet name/nn. All in all, I say if you love the name, go for it! If you’re still uncertain, take that as a sign and keep searching. Best wishes!
