Clay vs. Clayton

I fell in love with the name Clay, but I’m not sure if I should give him the longer name Clayton. I’m leaning towards just Clay but what do you think?

Go with Clay. Clayton sounds like a last name, and is totally unnecessary if you’re going to call him Clay. Clay is a stronger name.

My husband’s name is Clayton, and I call him Clay most of the time but I also call him by his full name. Definitely give him the option of having a fuller first name, he can always go by Clay also.

My parents named me Annie because that’s all they ever planned on calling me; I’m okay with my name, but I’ve always wished it was a nickname for Annemarie or Annabeth because I like the fuller sound of those names.

Your son may like Clay just fine, and that’d be great! Yet, I would go ahead and give him a fuller version just in case he happens to like one better than the other ... or in case he likes both and goes back and forth between the two.
