Marlene vs. ?
I want to name my daughter Marlene and pronounce it the German way (mar-len-uh) but I dont want to spell it Marlena do you think if I just spelled it Marlene people would call her mar-leen or could I instruct them to pronounce it my way. Middle name will most likely be Elsa or Liesel. Thanks lots -A.

They are two different names for it to be pronounced correctly you would need to spell it Marlena.

I think if you spelled it Marlene people would pronounce it (Mar-leen) because it looks that way. I think it would be mispronounced a lot, because the "A" sound in Marlene, like you want to spell it is silent. I would spell it Marlena if you want it pronounced like (mar-len-uh) I think it would be much easier that way for your daughter to not always have to correct people. Good Luck!!!

You can spell it any way you like! But you’ll (and she’ll) always have to tell new people how it is pronounced. I don’t think anyone (outside of Germany/German-speaking regions) would pronounce Marlene as Mar-len-uh. So, it’s just a matter of whether the spelling is most important to you or the ease of pronunciation.
