Why is style consistency important vs. With names?

I’m about to have my second baby, and everyone has been telling me with names that I need to pick names that are in the same style as my first daughter. But styles change and I think that no matter what the name is it shouldn’t be effected by the other siblings names. I mean clothes style changes for people all the time so don’t named? Can’t my first daughter have a little more of a trendy name and my second have an older fashioned elegant name? Am I standing alone on this? I just really don’t see the point if you love one name to ignore it because it’s a different style than another child’s name. Please comment and tell me what you think about this! Thanks! ~Jamie

yes, I agree I don’t think it matters. my name is Mary and my older sister’s name is Bridget. my mom chose a celtic name for my sister and a biblical name for me. Whatever you like is what you should go with! Good luck!

I don’t think it matters. What names are you thinking of?

They don’t have to anything. People just feel the need to follow a certain... theme, ’feel’ of names. I do get them, but it doesn’t mean you have to do so.
The biggest thing, I suppose, would be having two names drastically different, noticeably from diferent origins (say a Spanish and a Dutch name) or popularity (say.. Sophia and Gertrude?).
But if you like those names, go for it. Your children. It’s just important that you love the names and they aren’t harmful in any way.

It depends on the name

My older daughter is Brooklyn and I love the name Meredith. Everyone says I need something more trendy like Brooklyn’s so they’ll fit in with siblings but I really don’t like anything like that. I had Brooklyn when I was 18 and I’m now 24. My styles have just changed. Thanks again! ~Jamie

I think its a matter of preference. However I will say that I have a very traditional, classic name and my sister has an extremely trendy, modern name. When we were younger I was jealous of her because her name was so different and cute. Now that were older she is jealous of me because my name is classy and ages so well while her name sounds so juvenile. I like it when sibling names go together because of sound and because its kind of "equal". But obviously my parents and a lot of people don’t care and that’s their preference.

If you don’t mind me asking, what is yours and your sisters names, I want a feel for sisters names that are a different style just to kind of see how everything fits in if that makes sense. Thanks! ~Jamie

I tend to think the styles should be similar. Which is not to say mathch-y or theme-y. The example I once heard of this is can you imagine sisters named Catherine and Bambi? A little extreme, but still... I actually think the first poster’s example of Mary and Bridget is not an example of this. I can easily imagine little Irish lasses named both Mary and Bridget.

Also, my phone messed it up, since I’m using Siri. The name were considering is Adelaide. Siri is a mess though, but I still don’t know how it got so messed up. Sorry for the inconvenience and thanks for pointing it out. Thanks! ~Jamie

I don’t really think it matters unless you are having same sex twins. Then I wouldn’t use one unisex and one really girly name.

It doesn’t really matter. I have four kids and either two or three different naming styles, depending on how you define different styles. It’s not a big deal and I love all their names.
