Works for a girl vs. doesnt work

I recently fell in love with the name Declan but for a girl not a boy. The only problem is I am confused on the pronunciation of Declan. My whole family and I think it is (Deck-Lyn) but after going through and reading these polls I am not so sure I am pronouncing it right. Thoughts on how you think it is pronounced. I don’t know the sex but I am getting induced Saturday. So I want to have names for each gender already picked out. If I have a girl and it ends up being pronounced Deck-lyn than that will be her first name and her middle name will be Sophia/Sofia which I don’t know what way I wanna spell it. If I have a boy my husband picked out the names out they are Brantley Cruz or Bentley Cruz. Please help me in figuring up how to pronounce Declan and how I should spell Sophia if its a girl and which is boys name is the best. Our sweet little one will be joining Weston Christopher & Colton Whitley(4), and Lauren Olivia(2). Thanks so much~Skye & Tyler

I personally think, as I have male friends named Declan, that its quite a male name. If you are in love with it though, spell it Declynn or Decklyn so it seems more feminine and would appear easy to pronounce

Declan! Why ?????? It is definitely a boy’s name. If you want to use it for a girl I suggest changing the spelling to however you want it pronounced.
Bentley is marginally better than Brantley imo. Still sounds like a car though.

No! It’s a boy name an contrary to what poster 1 and 2 thinks misspelling it will not magically turn it into a girls name (it will turn it into a cheap, weak and tacky made up "name"). About how I pronounce it: deck-lan (like land without D, not lyn).

Deck-lin is the pronunciation, but no no no no no no! With your daughter’s girly name, they’ll assume Declan (or Decklyn, blech) is a boy. There are plenty of pretty unisex names. Declan is not one of them.

Declan (Deck-lan)
Declin/Declyn (Deck-lin)
Suggestion:Sidney, Jordan, or Desiree(dez-uh-ray)
I dislike Bentley - Brantley is ok, what about Brenton, Trenton, or Wesley?

You are not pronouncing it properly, its not lyn/lin its Deck-lan no y sound.

Its not unisex and spelling it wrong doesn’t feminize it.

Your boys have decidedly male names and your daughter has a decidedly girl name. Why would you make your next daughter’s name such an outlying name like Declan? It’s decidedly a BOYS name.

Brantley Cruz is nice. I would suggest Bryant Cruz as a better option however.

Heather Sophia
Stacy Sophia
Beverley Sophia
Kelsey Sophia

Would all be wonderful options that actually go with your other children’s names.

deck-lan

The second syllable is -lan, not lyn. Just because you butcher the spelling on it doesn’t feminize the name. It is a cruel thing to do to your daughter. Bentley or Brantley sound very pretentious. What about Benjamin or Brandt?

I actually really like Declan and think it’s pronounced as Deck-lan. But I think you can pronounce is however you want. I think it’s really pretty. If you like it, do it. I like the spelling Sofia 100000 times better than Sophie. :)

I had a friend with a brother named Declan and they pronounce it deck-lyn. And while I don’t like the name at all, I’ve always thought it was better suited for a girl with the whole "lyn" sound at the end.
