Hell-lehn-eh vs. Hell-leen-ah vs. Hell-ain-ah

How would you pronounce Helena if you saw it written say on a passport, a school register and so on? Also, if you could say where you are FROM it might help. I won’t mind so much about variant pronunciations if I find it’s to do with nationality. Hope this was clear enough and thank you all~ Evie

I’d pronounce it Hel-len-uh (like Helena Bonham Carter). I’m English.

^^ This is how I would pronounce it too. I think it might be a British thing which is reassuring since that’s where we live. Hopefully... do you think anyone in the UK would pronounce it differently? If so please let me know

Hell-ain-ah by default, but I would ask whether it was supposed to be hell-lehn-ah since I hear them both a lot. From Minnesota, US.

I’m from the US, the Midwest region. I’d pronounce it Hel-len-uh. I’m a huge Helena Bonham Carter fan, so that might have influenced my pronunciation.

HELL-en-ah. I’ve never heard it said any other way in English, but at my sister’s school (French Immersion), they say eh-len-AH.

HEre in Georgia, Helena would be ’hel-en-uh.’ I have known someone named Helene, pronounced ’hel-ayn,’ though, so it probably could be ’hel-ayn-uh’ too.

I think Helen-ah is nice, hell-AY-nah is not very pretty. Sorry. I both love and hate this name, depending on how it’s pronounced. I’ve heard it both ways, but around here (Ontario), most people say Helen-ah.

I pronounce it hell-ay-nah. I always here Elena being pronounced ell-ay-nah, so I figured it be the same for Helena. (New York)
