Baby Name Poll Results

unusual names vs. usual names
Here’s the thing: I have an extremely common name. My Mum always had trouble at the playground, four kids would turn when she called my name. My hubby has an unique name and he doesn’t like it. People can’t spell it and he goes by his nickname today. So I just wanted to hear some opinions on popularity? Does it bother you? Did you choose a unique name? How does it work? We’ve just found out three months ago and don’t know the gender yet, but I’d like to have opinions before I can’t see the laptop behind my belly. Thank you!! xMary

My son has a very unusual name with a more common nickname. That works great because he can have the best of both worlds.

I am in your shoes. When I was a child, there were four children with my name in the same classroom and I didn’t want that for my child. But when we got pregnant, I also didn’t want my child to have one of those names that gets made fun of. We all know that name - the one where as soon as the parent is out of earshot we ask each other what on earth they were thinking.
If you truly love a name I don’t think popularity should keep you from it, but at the same time we consciously tried to avoid the MOST popular names. Our little girl is named Evelyn. It is fairly popular, but its not in the top 10 in our area. I’ve only met one other little girl with the same name.

Having a unique name has it’s pluses and minuses. I love my unique name but expect to spell and pronounce it regularly. Pick a name with nickname possibilities and then go with what name fits.

I think you should pick a name you love. If you are thinking about going for unusual, it helps if it is easy to spell and pronounce.

I love my name (Raylene) as not alot of younger people i have grown up with have it because it is a bit old-fashioned. I also love Unique names. You want to make sure that you cant come up with any embarassing nicknames.
