Kate vs. Katie

Which do you prefer as a nickname for Catherine? (Spellings stay!) What kind of girl do you imagine with this name? She will always be called by either Kate or Katie. We live in England if that makes a difference! Thanks!

What’s the point in giving a child a name, and then not using it..

I think Katie is more common, but if she’s always going to be Kate or Katie, why not just use one of them? Katie’s quite popular here x

Catherine is after a family member.

but Katie and Kate are still forms of Catherine, so you would still be honouring the family member....

This is a decision that we have made, we are not going to change our minds. I have a full name that is never used - I see no problem with it. Besides, it will give her a choice when she is older.

Kate and Katie are both pretty, but my vote goes to Kate.

I’m a Katherine (and also live in England), always known as Katie as a small child and Kate since my early teens. Katie is cuter when little I think and changing to Kate feels more grown up. Never liked Kath or Kathy, they seem too old. I’ve always liked Kitty as well. At one time I wished that was the nickname my mum gave me!!

I think ultimately you have to see and know your child a bit before deciding on a nickname.

I most definitely prefer Kate. I picture a Kate has very strong, independent, classy, and sophisticated. I picture a Katie as more girl next door, nothing special, run of the mill girl.
