Do you like The name Scout for a girl? vs. Yes vs. No

We have only been able to agree on one name for our little girl and the name is Scout. We planned on keeping the name a secret, but we til our parents and a few close friends. Most of my friends loved the name, but my husbands friends, not so much. My husbands father liked the name, and let’s just say his mother was supportive. My mother on the other hand told us that she despised the name. She told us not to give our daughter such a "trashy" name. My husband and I both love it so much and are stuck. And we still don’t had a middle name. We are running out of time, so we came to you, wonderful people of babynamegenie... Help!

Scout is a great nickname but it’s not so great as a full name. It’s doesn’t have to be related to the sound of the full name. In "To Kill A Mockingbird" (which is where the name came from) Scout’s real name is Jean Louise. So maybe find a couple of family names and give her those as a full name with Scout as her nickname.

I’m not a fan of it but I guess it’s okay as a middle name.

Could we maybe get a few suggestions. We do not want to use Katelyn, Maya, Brooke, Cassandra, or Christina because those are the names my mother is trying to force upon us. She wanted nothing to do with me or my marriage or this baby until now. So names are greatly appreciated... So you don’t think the name needs to be related to Scout in any way to call her that?

If you two love it, don’t let anyone stop you! I think it’s a great name! It is unique but not unheard of and everyone will know how to spell it which is awesome. I feel like because of the popularity of the book and because it is well known, it will be fine as long as you are okay with people always asking if you got the name from To Kill A Mockingbird. It’s your child not anyone else’s, so just name her whatever you feel is right! God bless!!! :)

I like it as a nickname, but if you like it go for it!

^^^ to add to that, you can always name her Scout and then do a more "normal" middle name so as can go by that in case she doesn’t like it or wants to be more grown up or whatever in the future!

I love the name Scout. It’s what I named my dog. It would make a cute nickname for your daughter, when she is young. However, what about when she is older? It’s simply not a serious name. Every time she introduces herself people will be biting their tongues to prevent themselves from laughing.

I’m not a fan either sorry (sounds like a dogs name). I know it’s used on both males and females but...I think it would be better as a middle name or a NN.
Would be some nice alternatives that you could use the NN Scout for. But also if you and your husband truly love it and want to use it, don’t worry what others think. Scout is a name and if you use it others will get use to it :) go with what your heart tells you, she will tell you her name if it wasn’t the right name you would feel it.

I can understand why you don’t want to use those names under the circumstances. Here are a few ideas:

Clarity or Clara

I’d only use it as a nickname.
What about the name Scarlett?

Scarlet is a really pretty name and it sounds better than Scout by itself. I also think Scout sounds better as a nn. Good luck!

It’s much better as a nickname.

The name doesn’t need to be related to Scout in order for Scout to be the nickname. Scout started being used for kids after the book To Kill A Mockingbird came out and the girl’s real name wasn’t related to the nickname Scout.

I think Scout would be a fine nickname for any name.

I met a little girl named Scottie the other day, you could use that with the nickname Scout.

I think Scout is really cute. I actually had a friend who named his daughter Scout. I love the literary connection to To Kill A Mockingbird, which I think negates it not be a traditional name. I don’t find it trashy in the least. In fact, if I met a girl named Scout I’d assume her parents to at least be well read.

I’ve loved it since I read To Kill a Mockingbird. :)
