My hubby and I have been trying for 1 1/2 years...we are thinking of options too. My advise is talk to your OB about Chlomid. Or look into Instead Cups

if you’ve just finished college then you should try to get a job or go to uni and get more money before you decide to have a kid, maybe you’ll be able to get pregnant when you’re older, if not you can try IVF but i think that’s expensive, you can get a surrogate, adopt or foster, also i think if would be better if you stayed together longer and got engaged or even married before considering having a child because it’s important that a child is brought up in the most stable environment possible

start with talking to the OB...that way you don’t have to pay for just talking to a specialist and they can usually outline every possible things...if you’ve both been checked out and know there aren’t any actual problems, it’s best to get all the facts from the OB first

they asked for advice on how to have a child, if you’re going to tell them not to, stay out of it...whether or not they are ready for a child is none of anyone’s business but their own...keep your opinions to yourself

Thank you for the advice. I am now raising my boyfriends two children and i really would like to raise one of my own. He does have a job that supports the 4 of us and i am not planning on working until his son and daughter both start school.

To the pp: Well... if someone doesn’t have the money to pursue infertility treatment, how would they have money to raise a child? Just out of college (note spelling) and in this economy, I think it’s a wise suggestion to wait until you can provide a stable environment for a little one.

At any rate, the logical first step here is to consult a physician to see where the problem lies (i.e. him or you). Usually insurance companies consider infertility as no conception after active trying for 1 full year. If they will pay anything towards your testing and treatment, that depends on the type of coverage you have. Most don’t, especially individual carriers - but some states (IL for example) mandate it and some group plans offer it.

To the poster who suggested Instead cups -- those are for menstruation and have absolutely nothing to do with fertility.

Good luck!

Infertility treatment can be much more expensive than raising children... so don’t even try to give the pp a lecture on that

I don’t think anyone is begrudging you wanting a child, but what is the big rush? You are just out of college and don’t seem to be in the most secure place financially. You both sound young (I could be wrong), so I think people are just wondering what the big hurry is. At any rate, infertility treatment can be very expensive, but that may or may not be the problem. A good doctor can check you out and give you some ideas on maximizing your chances for conception. Also, you might want to try the clearblue easy ovulation predictor - it is a couple of hundred dollars but really helps you predict when your optimal time is to conceive - much cheaper than actual infertility treatments :) and a lot of women think they know when the best time is, but might actually be off -- this measures hormone changes in your body and tells you when you’re at your peak. Good luck!

They say it costs about $12,000 for the first year to raise a child born in 2007, and over a quarter million to raise a child through age 18. Crazy expensive! Unless you plan for other taxpayers to pay for raising your child through social programs. People do need to be clear on the expense involved, don’t you think? Infertility treatments are expensive too, but can hardly be compared overall.
