no! vs. yes! vs. undecided

I posted a poll a few days ago with the name Jules in it (for a boy). I got some negative reponses, but I’m really partial to it. I feel like it’s a nice alternative to Julian, and it’s really rare and distinctive these days. I might need to let this one go, but I really do love it; it reminds me of Jules Verne, etc. I had some responses suggesting that it might be girly. Do you think it is okay to use for a boy (if paired with a very masculine middle name)? Please comment!

i love it,reminds me of Jools Holland! i don’t think it’s girly even though it is unisex, would be better with a masculine middle name

I like it because of the literary Jules Verne reference. I think it’s rather cool and intellectual sounding. Sometimes people on this board seem to cringe at creativity when some of the most interesting people I know have really unique names. I would say if you like it, go for it.

NO! Try to find another more masculine name for yourr son and make Jules his MIDDLE name instead. This way you still get to use the name, and your son will thank you when he’s in school and not getting made fun of for having a girly name!!!!!

I like it. I watched an episode of A Baby Story or one of those shows on TV where the couple had named their son Saki for a Victorian short story writer by the same name. Jules reminds me of the same sort of idea. Plus, Jules Verne wrote some great adventure fiction so what a namesake to have!

I like Jules. I had a friend named Daniel Jules but in HS when we found out his name, we laughed. I just thought it was like "jewels" as in "family jewels." Other than that, I like it. I do like Julian, also.

My opinion is this: if YOU are really partial to the name, why are you even posting here? Don’t second guess yourself. If you like Jules, go with Jules! It’ll work out fine if you are confident about the name. Plus, if your son doesn’t want to go buy Jules, use Les as a nickname or use a middle name. That’s what middle names are for, right?

I think I have to remind you that this is your baby and you can name him whatever you want. Yes some people don’t like it but that’s inevitable. If you really like the name go for it. Now Jules is not my favorite name I personally think it is better as a nickname for Julian but as I said before this is YOUR kid. Raise your son to be a confident and strong boy because let’s face it kids will pick on anything so if it’s not his name it could be anything else. By the way at the rate boy names are being used on girls there will be no such thing as a masculine name by 2010.

I agree with Sam. It’s not like you’re trying to name your baby boy something absolutely ridiculous like Tiffany. If you like it, trust your instinct! Jules is a VERY good alternative to Julian, and it’s unique! Why are you second guessing yourself when you have a great name right there?

Thanks for your input everyone! I think I was being a bit too insecure about the earlier reactions, but it’s still my favorite and I think I’ll wind up going for it! And I entirely take Sam’s point that a nice, masculine middle name could come in handy if he hates it!

Just introduce him to "Around the World in 80 Days" and "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" at an early age an he will probably think his name is really cool.
