Branded Names vs. yes vs. no

Last night I made mistake of posting GRENDAL as a name .I saw it on the net and thought it was different wouldn’t sure if I liked it. I was attacked because this was some type monster in a movie and ancient writings. I didn’t know ! Should all names protrayed to be bad like (Jason & Michael) not be used?

Grendal is just ugly-sounding aside from its connotations, and most people with high school educations would recognize its terrible meaning from Beowolf.

Go back and read my other post I ask for opinions there are nicer ways I have been told they "hate" one letter difference in spelling a name . Some people on here give good advice others are cruel!!

I went to HS and did NOT read Beowolf. My class had to, I just didn’t because I switched into the class from a lower level and they weren’t to read it.

I see people make those types of reasonings all the time on here. People are told not to use names from the Bible that are "bad" people. People are told not to use Damien/Damian/etc. because it’s the "devil’s" name. ETC. A name is a name. Don’t not use a name you like because someone thinks it reminds them of something so ridiculous as the monster in literary fiction.

However, I must say, that Grendal is not an attractive name. I remember your post and I gave alternative names that started with G because I only liked Gavin and Grayson but you spelled it with an E.

The only reason I would not name my son something were if I felt strongly that he would be teased and I would hope that other parents on here would give GOOD reasoning as to why that would happen. Having the same name as a monster in Beowolf isn’t good enough. However, the name isn’t a great one.

Jason and Michael are common enough names that the connotation of a scary movie is not attached to the name.

How many people have you heard named Grendal? It’s uncommon, leaving people only to make a connection with the character in Beowulf.

Plus, as many people have said, it’s just an ugly name. Choose one of your other names that sound wonderful... Gavin and Grayson.

It really depends on the percentage of the name’s usage for an evil person or character. There are so many men named Jason and Michael that one horror movie character can’t ruin the name. There’s pretty much only one Grendel in history, so that’s what people are going to think. It’s like if I say Joseph, people will think of all sorts of different men, both wicked like Joseph Stalin and good like Joseph, stepfather of Jesus, but if say Adolf, people just think of Hitler because there’s not enough well known good men with the name to counter it.
