...of the name Fiona? We think it’s pretty, but we’d like to put out some feelers without asking our family and friends (we want to keep the name a surprise). Your help would be greatly appreciated! -Shannon

It always seemed harsh and unflattering to me.

I love the name!

The only thing it ever makes me think of is Shrek and Fiona...that kind of turns me off of it.

I don’t agree with Poster 1 at all. I think it’s cute. :)

I think it’s very sweet and feminine and spunky all rolled into one name. I quite like it.

We’ve never seen Shrek, so that doesn’t really make a difference to us. Thanks though.

It makes me think of Fiona Gallagher from The British series Shameless and it also makes me think of the female version of Finn in Adventure Time but other than that I think it’s a nice name.

To be perfectly honest, we’ve never met anyone with the name or seen any movie or show with a character named Fiona either. I think that’s part of the beauty to us. It seems so unique and pretty.

Maybe you’ve never seen it, but most people have and I wouldn’t want my child having the same name as an ogre in a popular children’s movie. There is a lot of potential teasing. I’m not trying to be rude, just giving an opinion.

I love it. If you take middle name suggestions I suggest Fiona Hope.

I don’t agree. Fiona in Shrek was also a pretty princess.

There are worse names

But she was still an ogre. That was the main point of the movie.

It’s fine for you to mention it. It’s just hard for me to understand completely when we don’t watch much tv or movies. Thank you still.

Shrek was a very influential movie, and has several sequels. You really should at least watch them if you are interested in using the name Fiona, because people will associate the two whether you like that or not.

The main point of the movie was that a very pretty, but superficial princess learned that beauty is more than how a person looks. She CHOSE to remain an ogre, overcoming her petty, snooty princess personality to be someone more genuine and loving.

I personally dont like the name Fiona it reminds me of shrek a tinsy bit. its not very unique but if you love it go for it

It’s a beautiful name! What are you considering as her middle name?

I love the name Fiona. It reminds me of the main character in this really great book I read called the Tea Rose. I wouldn’t worry about the Shrek reference. While Princess Fiona was an ogre she was also a good person. One of the themes of the movies were that looks aren’t as important as what’s inside, so I woildnt let the reference stop you

Thank you 16th poster for the quick synopsis of the character on the show.

We don’t have any middle name ideas yet. We’re still pretty fresh into our name search as we just found out it’s a girl last week. Thank you though!

I love the name Fiona. It’s so cute. And it’s name everyone knows but isn’t at all popular.
posted by guest :: 10 years ago | report
I like it, and if it weren’t for the Shrek association, I’d like it more and I bet it’d be more popular. The thing with T.V. is that it ruins lots of great names by: using a name for a villain that gets people associating the name for a villain over time (think Victor or Fergus), making a well-known character thus making it almost too popular in reality to use or making people think of that one character (like in your case). It’s all a shame really, but if you like it then use it. It’s the person that makes the name, not vice versa.
