I prefer Merritt. It comes with nn Merry which is cute. So many El- names are popular right now that Ellis, especially if she had the nn Ellie, would probably just be another one of the Elizabeth/Ella/Ellie/Eleanor etc crowd. Plus I know both are technically masculine but Merritt seems more feminine.

Merritt sounds more feminine, and has a nice meaning. Definitely go with Merritt

You didn’t get much feedback because neither are very good names for a girl.

Ellis is simply gorgeous. I love it! Merritt sounds like something you have to pat for annually. Ellis has lovely nickname possibilities as well. Ellie, Ella, Lisa, Elle (stunning.)
I love Ellis especially with the nickname of Elle.

I like both names for girls, don’t listen to the negativity/hate, both are super cute. I think I like Merritt a bit more than Ellis but either one is fine.

Spunky seems to mean masculine anymore. I don’t thinks it’s a complement to a name these days.
