It could pass as a nickname for Mason but not as a given name.
Or try Jace.

Mace has very negative connotations. Name him Mason nn Mace/Mase.

I’ve a cousin named Mason, and every once in a while he’s called Mase, as a quick nickname, but I definitely would not name my son Mace. It sounds like the pepper spray that women use to deter attackers. And if he’s the least bit creepy, I could definitely see some teasing.

Mace reminds me of the medieval weapon so IMO it could work as a boy’s name.
