what would vs. you do?

My husband and I are very excited to be adopting twin boys soon. Their mother wants to name them Justyn and Jayson. We can’t stand the names. We want to name them after our fathers--Theodore Robert (Theo) and William Anderson (Wills). What would you do in this situation? We don’t want to go behind their birth mother’s back and change their names later, but we also absolutely do not want them to be named Justyn and Jayson. Thank you! ~Claire

She has no say. And unless it is an open adoption she won’t know.

You will be their parents so you decide.

Maybe use Justin and Jason (spelled properly) as middle names. Theodore Justin and William Jason sound nice. But once the adoptions are finalized, you’re welcome to do what you want because they’re your kids.

I like poster #2’s idea. But I think when she give them up, she also gives up the right to name them. They are your children and their names should reflect that.

I would use Justin and Jason as their middle names.

It’s up to you but William and Theodore are brilliant! Wills and Theo are so cute as well!

I agree with posters #2 and #3. You are the ones adopting these boys. I don’t know what the mother’s reason is for giving them up, but once the adoption process is over they will be your kids. You just need to tell the birth mother that. When you adopt them, she no longer has rights over these children.

The names you have chosen are wonderful, strong masculine names. Passing on their grandfathers’ names is an extremely special way of welcoming them into your family. You will be the parents, you get to decide! You will decide everything else for them as they grow up, this is simply the first of many decisions you get to make!

Congratulations! Theo and Wills are great! You get to decide. The birth mother’s decision was to give them up, that’s all she needs to decide. :)

If you’re adopting them, they’re your kids, and the birthmother has no right to demand that they be named what she wants. I would budge on that issue. It sounds harsh, but she shouldn’t get the fun part of naming babies with no responsibility in actually raising them.

^I would NOT budge on that issue.
