list in first comment :) vs. feel free to omit or suggest vs. for a GIRL

I have a bunch of names that I love but it’s hard to cram it into one name without burdening the poor kid! So in the first comment I’ll post the names I like along with the reason why I want to use them. The list is a bit long but not too long! :) I tried to provide a lot of info but keep it brief at the same time. Please please please suggest names that you like as well! Also tell me why you wouldn’t like certain names too. THANK YOU. Daniela, 29 (husband Bradley is letting me name this one)

Antonia (because I love Iron Man so much! Since he’s Anthony “Tony” I’m using the girl version Antonia “Toni")

August (yes for a girl, August is the month I was born in, the 8th month [8 is a very auspicious number to me], there’s a lot of meaning for it to me)

Shiloh (because it means tranquil, it’s Biblical and cool!)

Madden (because we’re really into football in this family! I think this can work for a girl—there will be no Maddyn just Madden!!!)

Dylan (I know how people feel about this for a girl but I love it enough to deal with it! I prefer on a girl. I think it’s a really strong name when used on a girl. It’s number 489 in the Top 1000 popular names for girls so she’s not alone and unheard of yet not ubiquitous!)

Romilly (It reminds me of Italy without being Italian. I’m a huge fan of the band The xx whose lead singer is named Romy. And she won’t be 1 of 10 Emily’s in a class! Perfect for me).

Luminosa (it means luminous in Spanish and I think it’s gorgeous and unique. Luna, Lux, Lulu, and Lumi would be her nickname if we use this)

middle names options, feel free to suggest!
Beth
Gianna
Milena

Susanna (I’m not one for traditional names but I think this is so so so pretty. The nickname I’m thinking of is Zanna but there’s others that can be kooky like Sander)

Indie (just Indie by itself. India is incredibly common in my area and Indiana I’ve never been to so that could be a nickname or something. I love “indie” music, “indie” films, Indio, California is where I met my husband! I’m not a hipster so I’m not trying to be weird or ironic with this! ok :)

Athena (what’s not to love?! The goddess of everything I could want my daughter to be! Wise, courageous, just, intelligent, artistic, strong, dextrous! I love Greek mythology and history so this is definitely one I’m considering)

Artemis (because an arrow can only go forward. Artemis is a strong feminist because she was a huntress and protectress who didn’t want to conform to the tradition of being a housewife or a maiden. She was just as good if not better than the boys at her skill!)

Scarlett (partly because Scarlett Johansson has an awesome name and partly because scarlet is a vibrant strong color)

I like Shiloh, Romily and Scarlett. I’m curious as to why you posted your age? Only fake teen polls do that.

I love Artemis and Scarlett, though I quite like Romilly as well! A few more suggestions:

Astoria- I think it’s just lovely, and Story would be a cute nickname
Remi
Arabelle
Demeter- Another great goddess name
Waverley
Chessa- means Peace which is nice
Hadley
Portia- unique Shakespearean name
Wren

I felt I had to post my age because people might think of my name choices and the way I type with the smiley faces and stuff as "teen mom". I’m definitely all of 29! But a big kid in terms of my personality I guess. I would never troll when I have a pregnancy to attend to.

I wasn’t insinuating that this was a fake poll. I just have never seen anyone but the fake teen polls put their age. lol! I understand why you did it now. It’s not a big deal. Good luck! Poster 1

Sorry, Antonia goes after Susanna, I dislike it, no exceptions.

Really taking your suggestions into consideration guys! Thanks!

Except Antonia--that stays sorry!

Antonia - beautiful and uncommon.
August - unfortunate for a girl. Augusta would be better.
Shiloh - do you know your US History? Shiloh was a bloody Civil War battle. A very dark day.
Madden - sounds like a shoe company. Wouldn’t use for a girl.
Dylan - too boyish. How about Dylana!
Romilly - pretty.
Luminosa - a bit much, I think. How about Esperanza! I think it’s gorgeous exotic and I love that it’s Spanish for "hope"!
Susanna - pretty, fresh. Love nn Zanna. Sanders makes me think of KFC’s Colonel Sanders!
Indie - not my style. I think of Indiana Jones and all things Indian.
Athena - gorgeous and lovely namesake!
Artemis - I prefer Diana, the Roman equivalent. I LOVE being a mother and housewife, it’s my dream job and I find it so rewarding! I also love tradition and don’t feel compelled to conform to anyone especially feminists. I embrace womanhood and don’t feel the need to prove myself as a man.
Scarlett - I haven’t a clue who Scarlett Johansson is, however the name has a negative connotation for me. It sounds too much like harlot and the color is used to represent them (Scarlett Women).

Middle names I like:
Catherine
Estelle
Maureen
Delphine
Geraldine
Isolde
Imogen
Colleen
Constance
Alanna
Elaine

How about Allegra!
posted by guest :: 9 years ago | report
Allegra is an allergy medication. When people meet her, they’ll think of sneezing, coughing and blowing their noses.

I know Steve Madden is a shoe brand but I was actually thinking of John Madden the legendary football player/coach. You know like the Madden video games! But the shoes are cute too haha.

Artemis -- I’m all for the motherly feminine strong things about women and things like that but I also believe girls can do/like things that are stereotypically "male" like sports and action movies and playing drums and stuff like that. Just like men can like things that are stereotypically "girly". I’m ardently feminist. But I can’t wait to be a mom so I can show my wonderful girl that she can do whatever she wants! She can wear blue AND pink, she can be a girly-girl who can be Superman for Halloween if she wants to. :)

Scarlett Johansson is an actress! She’s really the one who has made this name popular lately. I know the negative connotation of "the scarlet letter" but I don’t think many people would bring that up so it’s ok with me. :)

I really love Catherine. I should’ve put that on my original list!

Elaine and Delphine I like too.

I would like Allegra because of the music connection but that other poster brought up the allergy medication thing so I don’t want people saying that too. :) - Daniela

Eliminate August, Madden and Dylan. They’re all boy’s names. I know sometimes they’ll show up on lists of girls names or some celebrity will name their daughter names such as this, but they’re still boy’s names. It’ll irritate her to no end because everyone will see her name on paper and assume she’s a boy. All through school, all through her adult life. This could mean stuff like being assigned to a boy’s PE class in middle school, getting a letter from the federal government telling her to register for the draft, guys refusing to date her because she has a "dude’s" name, etc.

My daughter looks great in blue!

August I never even knew was a boys name until I learned about Julius Caesar and how he rearranged the calendar. I thought it was a sunny girly name and that’s how I still think of it. It’s the month I was born in and the month I got married in. Augusta is just too curt for my taste. Augustina I would be open to but I just simply like August by itself for a girl. There’s girls out here named Noah, I think a little August could hold her own.

Madden I don’t think is just a boys name. I see it like Jordan which I know lots of little and older girls named. Maddie is the only nickname! I think it’s actually girly to be honest. Now if she was Maxwell I would emphatically agree with you.

Dylan I know is the most controversial but I like it. I’ve met enough female Dylans in my life who are perfectly fine with their name. Yes it is a "boys" name technically but there are literally girls out her named Christopher! Dylan is to honor the original Dylan, Dylan Thomas the Welsh poet whose name started this whole Dylan trend. And like I said, it’s not like she’d be the only female Dylan in the world. When people see that she’s a girl or when I say my daughter Dylan or Madden or August then that’s the end of it. And I’d explain why I picked it if they wanted me to do that. --Daniela

I’m pretty sure a guy wouldn’t refuse to date her just because she’s named Dylan. Come on now. She’s not Mildred or Bertha.

I love August, Shiloh, and Scarlett!
posted by guest :: 9 years ago | report
The names sound "cool" in theory. SCARLETT AUGUST if your looking for something different without the obnoxious "look at my name, it’s so unique" factor.
posted by guest :: 9 years ago | report
Athena & Susannah are my favourites. I also like Scarlett, Romilly and Shiloh.
I dislike the unisex names.
