Thoughts vs. On vs. Adonis

I love this name so much. I just think it’s such a nice and cute name for a boy. I’m considering using it, but I want to know what you think about it. I know that in Greek, it means male beauty, but I could honestly care less about the meaning because a name doesn’t define who you are. I have asked people I know, and they just think I shouldn’t give my son this name because of the meaning and they say that he may not live up to the name, Adonis. When you comment, please be honest and nice. I will not accept any rude and unecessary coments. Thanks! -Kiya

I am not a fan of it, but I don’t hate it. I dont typically go by what names mean. Usually girls are the ones who may be interested, but boys generally not. I think that if you like it, then follow your heart. I had a simialar problem where I wanted to name my daughter Reese, and my mum wasn’t a fan and tried to talk me out of it for months, but I stuck to it, and now she loves her name.. don’t go by what others think.

Thanks! By the way, Reese is a very pretty name.

When I see it, it reminds me of Adidas (the clothing/shoe brand). The name is ok, though. If you like it, use it. Don’t discuss baby names with other people because it’ll just drive you insane because people will always say something negative. If you wait until the baby is born and announce his name, nobody will say anything bad because there’s nothing they can do to change your mind.

I like the name but my only concern is what if he is not physically attractive ? He would be teased. I mean to me all human beings are attractive in some way but Adonissan to me is a perfect Greek god.

Honestly, I think it would be a VERY difficult name to carry for your son. Like you’ve stated, there is the Greek meaning, and like you said, meaning isn’t everything... But, on the same hand, it is a fairly iconic (that’s not the right word, but I can’t find a better one) name in the old Greek mythology... People who don’t even know Greek mythology know who Adonis is.

I was trying to think of any nicknames, just in case, and I literally could not think of a single one that your son might want to choose to use someday (in whatever capacity).

If it were me, I would definitely rethink the name very carefully, but if you really feel like it’s the right name (one that your son would be happy to have throughout his entire life), than by all means, go ahead. He is your son, but just remember that he is the one who has to carry that name with him his entire life... Good look no matter what you do!

Most people won’t know the meaning of Adonis and probably won’t take the time to look it up. But if the meaning bothers you, you could use Adonis as a middle name.

Middle name ?

Even without the meaning, Adonis would be a hard name to go through life with. I’m all for unique/less popular names for kids, but I’m not so sure I can get behind this one... Sorry.

I also really don’t like it. Atticus is better.

I’m really glad that I have gotten comments from you guys. I do have a lot to consider before this baby comes, which is not too far away. The meaning doesn’t bother me at all. I just really love the way it sounds and I love that as far as I know, there isn’t anyone I know named Adonis. I do agree that most kids are not going to know the meaning of the name which is impossible for him to get picked on in school. I don’t know about Greek mythology and I never knew the meaning and that it had any ties to Greek, until I looked it up and after I got the comments from people I knew. I respect what each of you had to say, and I thank you very much. I do have a feeling that I will choose it because my fiance is ok with the name too. Nicknamese for Adonis for me would be Donis or Donni or Don. Even if he didn’t like his name, he could always have teachers and friends and others calling him Donni and I spell it with an "I" becaue of the "I" after "don". I know that its crazy to be thinking about if my child will be cute or not.

I guess I feel similarly to your friends. For most names, people don’t usually know the meaning, but for Adonis, it’s actually used as a word to describe an extremely attractive man. So if your son somehow doesn’t fit that, it could be awkward. Plus, I’m not crazy about the way it sounds.
