Katie vs. Kate vs. other nicknames?

I have decided on Katherine for my far-in-the-future daughter because it has a special meaning, but I don’t know what nickname to use. I have been stuck on Katie for quite awhile now, but people say it’s trendy, cutesy and overused. Thanks for all your help! -Jessica

I think Kate is really cute, but you could also use Kitty and Kathy.

Kate is a really nice name, and it’s not overused. I also love Kat!! It’s short but a strong, yet feminine, name!

Katherine has special meaning to me. I’m an actress, and I’ve been in over 12 theatrical productions, and guess how many characters I’ve played that were named Kate? FIVE. hehe I thought it was necessary. I’m just not sure because Kate is so short and rhymes with almost everything, a lot of those words are negative. I keep saying it with what my other friends are naming their daughters, as far as nicknames.

"Amy, Azle, Crissy, Kate"?
"Amy, Azle, Crissy, Katie"?

Which sounds better?

I think you should wait until she’s born to actually decide. Nicknames should come natural. If I name my daughter Hannah I feel I’ll call her Hanny (hoping not) but it’s just something that comes natural.

Darn....I have to wait 12 years. :( I have a feeling either one of these nicknames will be extinct by then, yes? I know, I like to plan ahead.
p.s. There are no nicknames for Hannah. Well, Kate Gosselin calls Hannah Hanny, but it’s not an ageless nickname. Good luck to you though!

I Think That Katherine Is A Wonderful Old-Fashioned Name. If You Take The First Letters You Get Kat. You Could Use Kat But I Would Suggest Using Kitty For A More Childish Version Of Kat Which Is A Shortening Of Katherine. Sorry I Was Kind Of Stating The Obvious There I Just Wanted You To See Where I Got Kitty From.

Kate is so cute! and it goes with your friends daughters names nicely. Although i think you should call her Kathrine while she’s a baby, so when she understands her name, she will be able to choose her own nickname, depending on what she likes the best. My cousin did this with her daughter Jennifer. Over the years she has been Jenna, Jenny, Jen, and now Jenn. It’s nice to have options since you can’t decide your own name.

That makes a lot of sense. Thanks, Kirstin. Should I let her choose the nickname? I have a feeling it will be Kate because there are so many Katies now and still will be a lot in 12 years. I have always told people that the nickname takes care of itself, but my friends keep referring to my far-in-the-future daughter as Katie. AAAHHH!!!

I love the name Kit for a nickname. It’s very 30’s and 40’s. Not as overused as Kate or Katie. Good luck!

My name is Kate, and I actually like it. it’s kinda cute. I REALLY hate it when people call me katie, and they always do. I say, "My name’s Kate" and they’re all like, "Oh, hi Katie." I really hate this.

I’m AnneKatherine but have always been Katherine. I’m dying for a nickname though that is unique. I’m considering Katina. It’s the Italian version which is perfect since I’m musical.

My name is Kathryn. I was a small baby/toddler so my parents called me Katie. Kathryn was too big for me. Honestly, I really, really, really, really wish my parents hadn’t done that, as I love the name Kathryn and don’t love Katie that much. I plan to go back to Kathryn in high school. (i’m in 7th grade)
