Tom? vs. Yes vs. No

Hi everyone! Looking for any opinions on the name Tom on its own. Does it work? I love Thomas but our last name ends with an -iss sound so it really doesn’t flow imo. Also I’m not a fan of Thompson. Thanks!

Thomason maybe??? I know it is a surname but Tom on it’s own isn’t great and since Thomas won’t work.

Tom could be a nickname for Timothy! I know, should be Tim, but you could cheat a little

BEither way Tom is a nice strong name... pair it with a longer middle name and the flow would be nice

Something like Tom-Johnathan

Yes to Tom. And what’s so bad about Thomas Lastnamus? It sounds kind of ancient Roman actually. The cool factor.

I’d much rather he have a dignified first name like Thomas even if it shares the same last sound as your surname. Tom is fine. But Thomas, nn Tom, is better. Good luck! :0)

It is okay. Most people are going to assume that his name is Thomas nn Tom. You might use Tomlin (a surname) but with the popularity of girl names ending in lyn you might not want to.

Our last name is Lewis - so it would be Thomas Lewis. What do you think? Also thanks for the opinions everyone it is really helping! - Poster

I think Thomas Lewis works, especially if you love Thomas.

Thomas is okay with a surname ending in -iss (my hubby is Thomas Douglas). So funny, too, that the name would be Thomas Lewis because i had a department chair with that name. Personally, I don’t like shortened names as a given name. In our family genealogy we have the surname Tomlin, which could work as a given name with nickname Tom. Tomlin Lewis, nn Tom?
