How to convince vs. them to use vs. a longer name

My sister just gave birth to a sweet baby girl last night. They announced at the hospital that her name is Elle. It’s been my sister’s favorite name since Legally Blonde as she loves the movie and character. I think its a pretty name but I would love for her name to be longer. After hearing the name last night, I suggested to them Eleanor, Eloise, Ella, Elodie, and other names Elle could be a nickname for but they said they aren’t using a longer name and it’s just Elle. How can I convince them to use a longer name since I feel that my niece shouldn’t be named something so short?

It’s their child, & their decision (imho). Elle isn’t bad as a standalone name anyway.

I actually thought of using it as a nn for Gabrielle/Gabriella or Isabella, but have since changed my mind.

You don’t. It’s not your child therefore it’s not your concern. There’s NOTHING wrong with Elle. If it was some completely outrageous name like Doormat then that’s a different story. I’ve known plenty of girls just named Elle and they’re doing just fine. How would you feel if you picked out a name for your child but your sister kept trying to change it no matter how much you loved it?

Ella or Elodie are both cute but Elles okay too

Save it for your child. You don’t want to spark a family feud right after a joyous occasion.

How about when you give them permission to name your children.

Elle does sound like the word "el" in Spanish, as in el perro ( the dog) or el gato ( the cat). I’d just leave them alone since they won’t budge.

You don’t! Elle is a name by itself anyway. Quite frankly I think that was incredibly rude of you in the first place!
