Music vs. Names

Hey, I am having a baby come November, and my husband and I can’t decide on names! We think we want it to be a musical name (a.k.a, Amadeus (as in Mozart) or Pearl (as in Pearl Jam)). We don’t know the gender, so any suggestions would be great! Thanks! Gwen & Fabian

Erm. I was looking for something a little less... obvious? My husband and I don’t like Melody.

Harmony! I’m a singer, so I would know. It’s beautiful, it doesn’t make me think music, but it certainly fits your requirement.

If you wanted something similar to Pearl for Pearl Jam, it kind of depends on what bands/artists you like. Is there any specific type of music you like?

Well, my husband loves Frank Sinatra and Beethoven, so I guess he would be more into swing/jazz/classical. I like classic and indie rock. We have very different tastes in music, haha.

What about Indie (would work for a girl or a boy). I also like Aria, Cadence, Elise (Fur Elise) for a girl. What about Blue (for ol blue eyes), Jazz, or Drummer for a boy? GL!

I really love Lucy or Lucy Diamond, Lucy Skye. It’s such a pretty name and song. So Lucy Skye for a girl and Lennon Jagger for a boy.

You have got to be kidding with Amadeus and Sinatra. Your child would hate you for that. Can you imagine the roll call at school?
Aiden? Here
Brayden? Here
Aidyn? Here
Aeiden? Here
Kaeden? Here
Braydeyn? Here
Jaedan? Here
Aidyn? Here
Kayden? Here
Amadeus?

I’m all for standing out, but within reason! He/she is going to have to apply for a job some day -- I wouldn’t even look twice at a resume with these names on it, much less ever be able to take someone with those names seriously.

Um basically PP you just stated Kayden, Brayden, and Aiden over and over again. TRUST ME, I am still in school NONE of boys with these names are in my school.

I’m not a fan of Amadeus or Sinatra, but I would never write someone off just because they had a name I didn’t like. If a company picks their employees based on whether or not they like their names, then that’s not really a company anyone would want to work for. I don’t understand how someone wouldn’t take someone else seriously based on their name. They didn’t name themself, and their name has nothing to do with their talents, skills, etc. That being said, I think Sebastien and Indie are really cute.

You might not be in school with an abundance of /adens/ right now, but give it a few years. Those names in all of their incarnations and every conceivable spelling come up in these polls constantly. So just wait.

I don’t mind Sebastian or Indie, but yeah, there are names I could not take seriously at all. Did you know that Jermaine Jackson named his daughter Jermajesty? I mean seriously, come on. And a name is like a first impression and may or may not command respect - if I was putting someone in the public eye to represent my company, I’d probably think twice about a "Precious" or an "Amadeus".. Biased? Sure.. not saying that it’s not. But such is the way of the world.

Everyone deserves respect regardless of their name. First impressions..don’t judge a book by its cover right? Same should go with names. The person didn’t name themself. Their name had absolutely no bearing on their personality, skills, and well ..everything else.
Yes I did know about Jermajesty, and if I met her I wouldn’t look at her any differently than I would anyone else. She didn’t name herself. Ppl with strange names don’t deserve respect? That’s shallow and wrong. Not taking a name seriously and not taking a person with a specific name seriously(in your first post) are two different things.

Hell, maybe having a strange name and being in the public eye will actually draw more attention to the company. Granted, there are some crazy names out there and all those kids will be working in a few years. Employers are going to have to look closely at those resumes regardless of whether or not they like the applicants’ names. In all honestly Amadeus and Sinatra, although not my favorites, are no where near the level of insanity where some of those other names are.

I’m going to defend myself for a second...

First off, at least I’d be naming my children REAL names, not just something really stupid and made-up. Amadeus is a name. Sebastien is a name. I wouldn’t name my kid something made up, like Frank Zappa naming his kid Audio Science. That is something I would never do. While Amadeus and Sebastien are older, less popular names, they are STILL names. And plus, a lot of employers are looking for something a little out of the ordinary. While that may not apply for names, Amadeus would DEFINETLY stand out from all the Aidens, Bradens, Kadens, etc. What’s the fun of blending in, anyway?
