Harper vs. appeal?

Hi, I really want to know honestly (and don’t be offended, I just want honesty), what is so appealing about the name Harper? I’ve heard it a couple of times and now my sister said she’s considering it for her daughter and I was thinking what a horrible name! But I didn’t say that of course (which is why I’m here asking complete strangers), but I just can’t see it. I know someone online must like it too, so please, tell me what you see in it! I really, honestly want to know. I can’t ask my sister. Thank you.

The name is originally male. I love it on a boy, but I can’t stand it on a girl. I love it because it is musical and I like the sound of it. It’s easy to spell and to pronounce. It’s a solid name. Hope this helps you!

I dislike it too, but I do see the appeal. Surnames are in right now, very in, as are masculine names on girls. With the slight feminine connection of Harper to Harper Lee I can see why people are jumping all over it for their daughters because it sounds unique and strong with its masculine connections yet feminine because of Harper Lee. It honestly seems as if every baby girl born in the past two years in my area has the first or middle name Harper. Its really getting out of hand.

I’ve never liked it. There are 3 little girls named Harper at my daughter’s preschool and it just doesn’t fit them. Because there are 3, they looked for nicknames, so the one is called Hallie (her initials spell HAL) because there are no good nicknames for it.

I like it, not enough to use it, but enough to support other people choosing it.
I can’t really describe why I like it, it’s soft yet not whimsical? And I like -per endings. I love the name Piper, which might be another name you don’t understand the appeal of.
Personally I cannot understand the appeal of Cadence. At all. It’s just another one of life’s mysteries. Sort of like why people have favourite colours or dislike certain foods.

^^ Yes, but Harper Lee is only her pen name. In real life she is called "Nelle" (or was it Nellie?).

I’ve never gotten the appeal either. It makes me think of the verb to harp. I know it means someone who plays the harp, which is a sweet and lyrical instrument, but the combination of P’s and R’s in the name make it so harsh-sounding, it makes me think more of the verb (a negative thing) than the instrument (a positive thing).

That being said, I also don’t get the appeal of the name Kendall and that’s super popular!

I think it became more popular in recent years when the Beckhams named their daughter Harper. I personally like it for a girl, but think it sounds weird on a boy.

First of all, I don’t like it either. But I had a friend who named her daughter Harper Eliza, and we were pregnant together. (That was my first child, now I’m on my second) One day, we sat down and talked about names. Here’s what my friend said:
"To Kill a Mockingbird is one of my favorite books of all time. Harper Lee was an incredible writer and a strong person, and those are two things I hope my daughter becomes. Also, my grandmother played the harp. We were very close, and although she died recently, I would love to honor her memory by naming my baby Harper. Lastly, I just think it’s such a strong name for a girl. I picture a feminist who stands up for what she believes is right. But the name is also sweet and friendly sounding. What a great name."
*Note: I don’t agree with her about the kind of person I see when I picture a girl named Harper.
So, in short, people like the connection to Harper Lee, the musical association, and that it seems to be a "strong" name.
Hope this answers your question! :)

Harper Lee’s actual name is Nelle (Ellen spelled backwards after her grandmother Harper Lee. Pen name Harper Lee.

I like Harper. I probably couldn’t give you a satisfactory answer as to why. I just like the sound of it and think it sounds better on a girl than a boy.

I know it was her pen name but a lot of people don’t know that and/or don’t care about that. ALl they know is that Harper Lee wrote TKM and she was a girl so in their minds Harper=girls name. Strange but you would not believe how many people think that traditional male names are girls names because some famous woman decided to use it as her stage/pen name.

I think Harper sounds silly on a girl. It’s a bit much on a boy, too, but the "strong" sound of the name works better for a boy.Maybe because I live in Canada, but I don’t think anyone in their right mind (except maybe far right-wingers) would name their child Harper right now, just like nobody in the US (except maybe crazy far left-wingers) would name their kid Obama. And yes, I have heard that people named their sons Obama.

I don’t think it’s a very pretty name, but I can see how someone who likes Harper Lee would use it for its meaning (even though, as other posters pointed out, it would be more accurate to give your daughter the name Nelle or a variant thereof if you wanted to honour her).

I don’t get the appeal either.I’ve even tried to make myself like it by focusing on the musical association and thinking of beautiful music from a harp but it doesn’t work. The name just feels very harsh to me like a harpy/harping or nagging on something.Just very unflattering and it’s so trendy that I think it’s one of those names that will lose favor quickly and end up sounding incredibly dated in no time.

I saw the cutest little twin girls in a restaurant the other day and then I overheard their names and they were Ella and Harper and I just thought ugh! Those have got to be the two most overused names of the moment!

I really dislike the name Harper, I don’t get why people like it at all. Ugly name.

I really like Harper. I wouldn’t use it now because it’s so popular, but I like the sound of it. I think the appeal for me is that it isn’t super frilly, it has a roughness or edge to it, while still being cute on a girl. But obviously, if you prefer names that are frilly or not at all unisex, it’s not the name for you.

I hate the name. t’s so unattractive. I tried to see the appeal and honestly I can’t. It sounds harsh and completely awful. It sounds just like harp on (to annoy someone). Wouldn’t it be an insult tobe called Harper? harp = annoy. harper = annoying person. It doesn’t sound ice at all and I really don’t get it. It’s not even a common surname, is it? I know it’s a surname, but is it common? I hope the trend stops because Harper is mean sounding, ugly, un-cute, and bitter sounding. Of course it’s not frilly and I often like names that aren’t frilly, but this name downright harsh. I hate it.
