Problem!!! vs. Help!!!

So I have one daughter named Mia Grace. My husband and I divorced years ago, and I am now getting ready to marry a wonderful man also also has one daughter that is very close in age to my daughter (ages 11 and 12) But here’s where the problem comes in - his daughter has the EXACT SAME NAME! Mia Grace. Obviously we can’t have two Mia Graces in the same family. What do we do? Neither girl is willing to start going by Grace, especially if the other girl gets to keep Mia. We can’t change their name, as they are both school aged and have gone by Mia all their lives. And Mia doesn’t really have any good nicknames. How do we work this out? Help!!

Why don’t you let each girl choose a nickname or another name to go by at home? You could also call one girl Mia and one Mia Grace or one M and the other Grace. Good luck

Give them both nicknames. They can both be Mia at school, no problem. At home, call the Kitty and Birdie or something. Or Sunny and Smiley.

You could use their current last names as initials. For example if your last name is Johnson your Mia could be called MJ

You don’t have to change anything. They don’t have the same last name.

You can call them Mimi and MG

Mimi and Emmy. Or any other nickname that they want (within reason). If they don’t want to change names, let them live with both being called Mia for a while and they’ll definitely change their minds.

Thanks for all the advice so far! Everyone has been so helpful. See, another problem is that having the same name is really starting to make them not like each other... Getting a stepparent is a huge change in their lives, and in some ways, a stepsister is even harder. They are VERY competitive with each other, and both want to be called Mia. But when they are both being called Mia, they argue. All the time. I just don’t know what to do. Sixth poster, I do like your thought about them both having Mia for awhile, to see if they’ll change their minds.
Again, thanks everyone!

Why don’t you get them each a baby name book and let them look through and come up with a name they want to be called at home? It doesn’t have to be in any way connected to their actual name. Like in "To Kill a Mocking Bird", Scout’s real name is Jean Louise and in "Little House on the Prairie" Laura’s husband calls her Beth even though that’s not her actual name.

Of course, you and your hubby would have to have veto rights on these proposed nicknames so it doesn’t get too goofy. But this way they’d get to have some control over what they’re called and they’re both probably feeling like they don’t have a ton of control in their lives right now.
