Name Advice vs. Needed

Our families love the names Alice, Nora, Evelyn, and Juliet but we do not. We know a lot of people these days love the names and are using them for their children but the names have never appealed to us and we just don’t love/like them at all. What are the reasons people love these names? Are there any variations of the names? We love names like Daphne, Kate, and Willa but both our parents and grandparents have been negative about the names we love (they say they are dated, sounds like names of strippers, and that they belong to women who are stuck up) and have pushing hard for us to use Alice, Nora, Evelyn, and Juliet for our daughter. We want to use the names we love but we don’t want our families to hate our daughter’s name either.

I LOVE both sets of those names!
I like the way Alice sounds; its soft. Evelyn is my mothers name so it has a special place in my heart; especially with the nn Evie. Juliet just sounds lovely. I dislike Nora though.
Daphne, Kate & Willa are ADORABLE!!! I actually find that both sets of names have the same vintagey, classic feel. I’m not for sure why anyone else wouldn’t LOVE them.

Allison or Elise maybe for Alice; Vera for Nora; Eve or Emmeline for Evelyn and Juliana for Juliet.
LOVE the combos of Daphne Kate, Evelyn Willa, Daphne Juliet.

Alicia as an alternative to Alice?
Norah
Eva instead of Evelyn
Julia/Julie instead of Juliet.
Norah Kate would be cute
or Daphne Eve
Julia Willow?
and ultimately, its your child, you have to like the name, not your parents

Haha, actually Alice Juliette is the name we all picked for my princess. Well, Alice is making a huge come back. It’s just classy, spunky, girly and very beautiful name. Grab this name before your friends or relatives used it. Good luck!

I think Daphne, Kate and Willa are great names and they do not at all sound like stripper names. Alice, Nora, Evelyn, and Juliet (IMO) are more dated than Daphne, Kate, and Willa.

It is sad that your family is giving you a hard time. My advice would be to name them whatever you want. In the end your family is going to love the child and eventually they might come around to the name.

My advise would be to not tell your family what you plan to name your child until your child is born if this is a divisive issue.

This is your child, not your parents and grandparents child! You should be choosing a name that you love, not a name that you like and settle with. I think Daphne and Will are absolutely gorgeous and they definitely aren’t dated, stripper names, or "stuck up" names. In my opinion, Alice and Nora are very dated. Your family members will learn to love your daughter’s name if they truly love both of you and her. Surely they wouldn’t want someone to choose their child’s name for them so why are they doing that same thing to you? I think Daphne would make a beautiful name and if you love it then you should use it! And if your family really still hate the name you love even after you give your daughter that name then they obviously aren’t very supportive of your decisions as the parents of this child. Use a name you love!

It’s your child. You choose. Your family will love your daughter even if they don’t love her name. And if they were smart, they’d keep their mouths shut.

Go with Daphne! You both love it, and it is a stunningly gorgeous, uncommon name! There is nothing that points it towards being a "stripper" or "stuck up" name and it is less dated than Alice, Nora, and Evelyn. And if your parents and grandparents really love you and your daughter, they will learn to love her name no matter what you choose, especially if it is a name that you love! like the fifth comment says, sure they wouldn’t have wanted someone to choose the names they gave their children for them. So it is beyond my comprehension why they would want to do that to you. Daphne is a wonderful choice!

Daphne and Willa are THE MOST GORGEOUS NAMES EVER!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks everyone. We love Daphne, Kate, and Willa but Daphne is our most absolute favorite and their least favorite as they say that’s the name that sounds the most like a stuck up person, they also say it has a ditsy and dumb personality vibe to it due to the Daphne from Scooby-Doo (though we think the character was awesome and she was both our favorite when we watched the show when we were little kids).

Thank you for your help!

The fact that Daphne gives off a certain vibe doesn’t mean that your daughter will have the same personality. I know several boys named Christopher, many people have told me it is a name you would see on a jerk or a man that isn’t very nice but several of the boys I know named Christopher are very polite and very kind. Daphne gives me a very elegant and girly vibe. Not a stuck up or ditsy one. Your families will learn to love the name you give your daughter in time! If not then they don’t respect you or your decisions as her parents! Go with Daphne if you love it! Best wishes!

Are they kidding? Do they know that people are naming children Sparkles and Loki? They should count their blessings that you like such gorgeous names. Show them this thread. Or better yet tell them to google "worst baby names" to see what’s other grandparents have to endure. :0)

Both your names and their names are great and they’re all basically in the same style. You’re just dealing with personal connotations of the various names rather than any innate problems with the names you’ve chosen.

We all have a finite amount of chances to name a child. You’ve got this chance in your lap right now and there’s no guarantee that you’ll get another (though probably you will if you want). Do the responsible thing and research a bit to find out that there’s nothing actually wrong with Daphne or Willa or Kate and then use one of them. Otherwise you’re letting someone else use up one of your limited chances.

Personally I love the name Daphne, too. As well as the name Juliet. I really think they’re all the same style.

Huh? Daphne and Willa are both sweet and rather retro, imo. I am especially fond of Willa (and Willow). I’m not a fan of Kate as a given name as I feel it is nicknamey and abrupt sounding. I would suggest you know discuss names with your older family members. Once baby arrives, they will love the name because it is attached to a child -- trust me on this ... ;o)

Sorry ... "know" should be "not" ... doh!

If you don’t like them, don’t use them. I personally really like some of them, but all of that doesn’t matter if you guys don’t. Use a name you love and don’t tell them what it is. They’ll be less likely to say something about it once she’s already named. I wouldn’t settle just to please someone else.
