Huge vs. Dilemma!

My husband Amand I have four beautiful daughters, Arabella, Lucille, Helena, and Annalise. We are expecting a fifth girl. I am excited, but my husband is absolutely crushed. He wanted a son very badly. While thinking of names, he said he wants to name the girl a boy name - Carson. Somehow, to him, it will replace the fact that he never got a son. I think it’s an awful idea, as I generally don’t like unisex names, all our other daughters have very feminine names, and most of all, I don’t want our youngest girl to feel like she isn’t appreciated for the girl she is. I will not give in, and neither will he. What should we do?! Help us!!!

There are cute unisex names like Erin, Logan, Taylor, Jamie, Jamin, that you could have...

Remind him that no matter what he does, she will never be a boy and if he were meant to have a boy he would or he will.

With that being said, Carson is not unisex because names that end in -son mean son of someone. Their are plenty of unisex names that fit girls like Kendall, for example. Perhaps you will find one that you love. If not, some name will light a spark within the two of you when you hear it, in time.

I have 6 kids and always wanted a girl but we didn’t get one until our 6th that didn’t make me call my son Telulah!. Your husband should be happy that he is blessed with 5 beautiful little girls. Compromise, maybe Carson as a middle name or a girls name sounding like Carson, for example Cara,Carla. Hope I helped and good luck.

I find it hard to believe your husband said that and wasn’t kidding, but I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt. Unisex names don’t generally mean that you don’t want girls or don’t value them. I personally like them, and I think there are plenty to choose from that would be just as pretty as your other children’s names. My guess is you had a lot of say in the naming of your other children, maybe a compromise is in order for this one. I agree that Carson might not be a great choice, but I think you should budge some.

I’d find a unisex name you could both agree on.

What about the name Corinne? I think it sounds good with your girls but also has modern feel to it?

Your husband needs to grow up. I adore unisex names and some traditionally "boy" names on girls, but naming her Carson for that reason is an AWFUL idea.

If anything name her Charlotte and call her Charlie. That might work.

Carly?

DO NOT LET HIM DO THIS I know girls who were in the situation and wound up with boy names and it made their lives a misery. Even worse when all her sisters have clearly girly names. He needs to stop being selfish and think of her happiness. Names like Samantha (Sam) Cassandra (Casey) or Roberta (Bobbie) etc, would be the only compromise route to offer

I’m with you on this one, momma! I think it’s in poor taste to give your 5th daughter a boy’s name cause daddy wants a boy. It was always clear to me growing up that my father would have liked me to be a boy as well (I was the second daughter). I have a feminine name but he took me to sporting events which I actually did enjoy very much. When me and my sister got married he enjoyed having sons-in-law and now that I have a grandson he is overjoyed. So maybe tell your husband that if it will help.

Carson is ugly. But what about Charlie?

I take your side. And I don’t think Carson is unisex- it’s definitely boy.
Jamie might work, but most unisex names sound too boyish.

If you like unisex names, that’s one thing. But to name a girl a unisex name BECAUSE he didn’t get a boy, that’s atrocious. I can’t even comprehend how he wouldn’t see that as a horrible, horrible idea. I wouldn’t give in.

Name her Amanda after your husband, like having a son but not...our job as parents is to do what’s best for our children and their self esteem, our self interests come after their well-being. His desire is not more important than your child’s identity.
