Aleksander (Aleks) vs. Alexander (Alex)

My husband and I love the name Aleksander (and calling him Aleks) for our son but our family has said that they spelling is weird and that we should spell it Alexander (Alex). Is our spelling too odd for Americans?

I think if either of you have ancestry that points to the same origin of Aleksander and you feel personally connected to that, you should go ahead and use it, but if not, I’d stick with the English spelling.

Absolutely not too weird at all! I love the spelling Aleksander nn Aleks. It’s much more unique and really attractive. I love this name and honestly, the more exotic spelling is refeshing and ads a bit of edge to the name.

Incredibly handsome name either way, I think it’s so important you go with the spelling YOU love. Don’t compromise to in order to conform to a majority. Aleksander is perfectly acceptable and anyone who doesn’t think so, needs to broaden their horizons more and realize there’s more to the world than their own little culture.

Russian-slavic languages translate to Aleks. It isn't weird at all.
