Is the spelling vs. Lotty vs. Wrong??

Three months ago we had a little daughter and named her Charlotte Annabelle, with a nickname of ’Lotty’. Not Lottie or Lotti, it’s Lotty. We have not heard the end from family and friends about how we spell her nickname ’wrong’. All the naming sites say Lotty is a valid spelling, just less common. Are they being unreasonable? Is Lotty the wrong spelling? Thank you.

Most spell it Lottie but like some people spell Nicky as Nicki or Nikki...I’ve even seen Niykee. To each their own. Lotty isn’t bad.

I think Lotty is much lovelier than Lottie.

Lottie is prim and overly cutesy, Lotty has a softer and friendlier look, imo.

It’s a valid spelling and even if it wasn’t, it’s only a nickname so it doesn’t need to be valid.

Lotty is beautiful (so is Charlotte BTW) and yes your family are being unreasonable! Your spelling is different but not silly... If it was Lote or something, I would feel differently.

Congratulations on your lovely girl, remember it’s your choice, and Lotty is gorgeous with this spelling!

Sorry to say this.I’m really not trying to be mean but to be 100% honest-I can see their point-that spelling would bother me too.I definitely feel that it should be Lottie.

I do prefer Lottie, but as long as Lotty is a valid spelling they are being unreasonable. It’s not a bad spelling, just alternative.

Personally I prefer Lottie, but since it’s a nick name I don’t think it matters how it’s spelt. If your friends and family want to spell it Lottie, then that should be ok. If it was her legal name, then it needs to be spelt correctly but it’s not and kids get different nn’s from different people.

Lotty is fine. It’s only a nickname...

Ie can be changed to y or just an i. It doesn’t matter.

Honestly, it’s a nickname, not a traditional full name so I don’t know that there would be one accepted spelling. Besides, with all the Mikynzy’s and Maisyn’s, Lotty seems very normal to me!

I do think it looks odd; sorry. People get to have opinions. I do think they should drop it though -- it’s rude to keep harping on it.

Lottie is the typical spelling of the nick name for Charlotte, because it ends in Lotte. If I were a Charlotte, I personally wouldn’t use Lotty, I’d used Lottie - because I like the IE better than the y. However it’s a nickname, it’s not her actual name, so I wouldn’t really work about it. However, I also think you shouldn’t pick the spelling of her nick name and let her decide for herself -- she might not like the Y and prefer it to be spelled with an IE.
