Didn’t use it vs. Still used it

How much do people you know influence how much you like a name? Like if your best friend is named Jane and before you met her you didn’t like Jane much but now you do because you associate it with her. Can you give examples of names you didn’t use because of people you know? How well did you know the person? Did anyone know someone they didn’t like with the name but still use it for their baby? Any stories you could give me would be useful: the name, why you didn’t/did use it, who it was associated with, how well you knew them, etc. I’m trying to decide, but I need input from people I don’t know. Thanks!

My mother doesn’t want me to use Athena because she knows an Athena she doesn’t like but I won’t let that influence me because I love the name.

We chose Jack for our son. I know so many Jack’s, some good and some bad, so I guess they balance each other out.

When we were looking at girl names, before we knew it was a boy, my husband liked Annika, but it just reminded me of this absolutely horrid camper I had years ago and that’s all I could think of when I heard the name and I didn’t want that thought anywhere near my baby, if that makes sense. Turned out to be a boy, anyway, though.

Not quite the same, but I love both the names Robert and Elizabeth, but they’re the names of my aunt (who I don’t like all that much) and her husband (who’s a total jerk) and I didn’t want them or anyone else to think I named my kid after either of them. Even if I used different nicknames (Robbie instead of Bob; Lizzy instead of Beth), they’d still have the same first names.

When I first found out I was having a girl, I really wanted to name my daughter Delaney. Then, I met a horrible woman named Delaney and then she was the only thing that came into my mind when I heard the name Delaney. I know I shouldn’t have let that influence me, but it did, and when my daughter was born we named her Emma instead.

Yeah this doesn’t really relate that much but I loved my husband so I named my first son after him, then your husband cheats on me so we got divorced... but my son is still stuck with the name...

I’m a teacher. I have so many students with so many different names it’s so hard to find a name that doesn’t also belong to one of my students! I finally settled on Katherine and Daniel because they were so crazy popular that I didn’t just imagine one person. There were other names I kind of liked, but they made me think of one specific student and, good or bad, I didn’t want that to be my main association with my baby.
