Okay vs. Not

I’ve kinda always said that I was going to name my son Aladdin, yes after the disney character. I’m 23 now though, and 39 wks. along and I’m just not sure I still have the nerve. Will he be made fun of? Will other kids even know the reference? Is it a good name? MN was going to be Eric. Is that an acceptable combo? Thanks for the help.

NOOOOO!! Don’t do that to your child! Horrid!

Why do you say that? Please explain why it’s so horrid? I’m not sure I would have used that as the word...

Thanks.

Uh...seriously?

Really there is nothing to explain. It’s common sense.

Yes, I’m serious.

I just think that it’s too "Disney." And, yes, kids will know the movie. I teach school, and even my kindergartners are familiar with the movie Aladdin!!! If you have to use it, use it as a middle name. I’m not trying to be mean. It’s just that Aladdin does not seem to be something that you would name a real person. I really can’t imagine the name Aladdin on a resume or work application...he might not get equal treatment.

Now, I’m not the OP. But, I don’t understand how a name someone’s liked since they were a little girl can be called Horrid without some sort of explanation as to why.

I, personally, don’t like the name as a first name because of the blunt reference to Disney. I think that she should consider it as a middle name, if she’s got her heart set on it.

I know I’d cry if people were being this unwilling to help me.

Have a heart.

Maybe you should use the thing encased above your eyes. Please Reconsider.

You do understand that most emotions are from your brain rather than your heart...

Well, it takes a pretty heartless person to say things simply to hurt another person.

Look, I’m all for unusual and interesting names. But Aladdin is just silly. Of course he will be made fun of. Sure, kids will make fun of everyone for everything, but why would you purposely give them a name that will not (probably never) be taken seriously?

Aladdin is tied to that ONE character -- there’s no one else to base the name off of. You might as well call him Spongebob.

Some other 3 syllable names that start with an A you might consider are
Abraham
Absalom
Adrian
Alessandro
Alexander
Anthony
Aurelian

What about Aldin

Wouldn’t they be dead if they didn’t have a heart?

It’s a figure of speech...

You’re all being unfair and a bit absurd.

It’s a bit absurd to say that you want to name your child Aladdin and ask if the child will be made fun of.

What’s so unfair about peoples responses? They’re just being truthful -- the person wanting to name their child Aladdin will have to endure the same responses in ’real life’ if she decides to go through with it.

And it won’t even be her that has to go through it -- Aladdin will have to be the one trying to ignore the snickers at roll call. Aladdin will be the one getting rejected by girls. Aladdin will be the one not getting calls when employers read his resume.

People should think these things through a bit better.

If you are having second thoughts and are asking for advice - I think you should listen to that intuition.... try Alan

Your child will have a REALLY hard time with that name, sorry. It sounds like you know it too. What about something that you could shorten to Al, like the genie calls him. Alexander would be cool. Your fun at home nickname could be Aladdin or Allie, while his school nn could be Alex, Alexander, Xander or still Al.

Please don’t do it for his sake.
