Gaines? vs. ?
My husband and I are expecting our first child. We don’t know the gender yet but kinda like Gaines for either gender, boy or girl. Let us know what you think we realize it’s a little different and we would like some unique but southern middle name suggestions. Thank you

I really dislike Gaines, sorry. I don’t think it’s very nice sounding and could be a source of teasing if he or she happens to carry a few extra pounds on them. I think the southern tradition is to use family surnames as given names. Are there any surnames in your family tree that would sound nice as a given name?

Gaines is fine as a middle name for either gender (as a surname).
I’m not a fan of it being a first name - especially for a girl. I agree that peers can be cruel (as noted in the above posts).
